Davidic Covenant
2025 Theme: Faithfulness
Series Title: Covenant Faithfulness
Scripture: 2 Samuel 7:1-17
August 24th, 2025
Something to think about:
Most of us desire to live lives of significance and worth. We want to know that what we do and who we are make a difference in the world around us. However, try as we might, many of us feel like what we do and who we are doesn’t matter. We feel frustrated at our lack of accomplishments or achievements. Then we compare ourselves to those around us, or those we read about or see on social media or TV, and we wonder how we will ever measure up to such high ideals and success.

As we come to another message in our series on “Covenant Faithfulness,” we look at the covenant that GOD made with David in Second Samuel in the Old Testament. David, who had come from very humble beginnings as a shepherd boy and the youngest of his family, had become great in the world’s eyes, but also, and most importantly, in the eyes of GOD. Through him, GOD led the nation of Israel to safety, security, and prosperity. Through David’s faithfulness, GOD blessed not only him, but the nation.

After establishing Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel and bringing the Ark of GOD into the city, David had ambitions to build a permanent place for GOD’s presence to dwell. Rather than a traveling tent (the Tabernacle), David desired to build a Temple for GOD in Jerusalem, but GOD had other plans. Instead of David building a house for GOD, GOD would make an everlasting house for David and his descendants. GOD would bless David with a promise and a covenant to establish an eternal kingdom through the line of David. Let’s take a closer look:

According to Biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann, “this is one of the most crucial texts in the Old Testament for evangelical faith.”[1] In fact, this covenant is the precursor to the New Covenant established by Jesus at the Last Supper. And this leads us to our key point this morning:

Key Point: “GOD’s promise to David was an unconditional covenant of love that would eventually be realized in Christ, Jesus.”

The elements of this covenant agreement are as follows:

[1] Brueggemann, Walter. 1990. First and Second Samuel. Interpretation, a Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching. Louisville, KY: John Knox Press.
1. GOD will establish David’s __________ forever.

2 Samuel 7:11b (NLT), Furthermore, the Lord declares that he will make a house for you—a dynasty of kings!

2. GOD will establish David’s ______________ forever.

2 Samuel 7:16 (NLT), Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.
3. GOD’s will will ultimately be accomplished through David’s ___________________.

Luke 1:30-33 (NLT), 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
Something to take home:
So, do you want to leave a mark on the world like David? Do you want to leave a legacy for others to follow? Then consider the words of Paul in his letter to the Church at Corinth:

1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (NLT), 26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”

GOD’s unconditional covenant to David continued through Christ and still exists for us today. As we submit to faith and follow Christ, that covenant agreement that GOD made with David so very long ago extends to us today as children of GOD. And as GOD’s children, we are His heirs.[1] And though this is foolishness to the world, this is the grace of GOD for anyone who would believe.

Key Point: “GOD’s promise to David was an unconditional covenant of love that would eventually be realized in Christ, Jesus.”

[1] Romans 8:11-17.

Read 2 Samuel 7:1-17.

GOD’s promise to David was an unconditional covenant of love that would eventually be realized in Christ, Jesus.

What did David want to do for GOD and what did GOD promise to make for David (vv. 1-11)?

What did GOD promise to do through David’s descendant (vv. 12-13)?

Why did GOD promise to do this for David and his descendants, and who would ultimately come as the fulfillment of that covenant promise?

How was the line of David through to Jesus a fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant in Genesis 12:1-3?

How is GOD’s promise to David fulfilled in the early church through the Apostles (Read Acts 13)?

How does the covenant agreement with David continue today in the body of Christ?
