hey
Big Idea of the Series: This four-week series takes a look at what freedom in Christ entails. Does this exempt us of any spiritual responsibilities? Jesus says his “burden is light,” but does this mean that a Christian life will always be an easy one? This shows us that true freedom moves us toward obedience and debunks an unchristian understanding of freedom.
Hey friends, welcome to Week 3 of our series on Freedom!

Over the last two weeks, we’ve been unpacking what freedom in Christ really means.
-In Week 1, we looked at some common misconceptions—how freedom isn’t just doing whatever we want or escaping responsibility.
-Last week, we saw how real freedom is found in Jesus, who broke the power of sin and brought us peace with God.

This week, we’re leaning into what freedom looks like in everyday life.

What does it actually mean to live free as a follower of Jesus? And here’s the big idea we’re exploring:

BIG IDEA:
True freedom in Christ isn’t about what we can and can’t do—freedom moves us toward joyful obedience because of God’s love for us.

That might sound strange at first—how do “freedom” and “obedience” fit together?
Don’t they seem like opposites?

But today, I want to show you how they actually go hand-in-hand. And how living in God’s love leads us into the kind of obedience that’s life-giving—not life-draining.
FREEDOM & OBEDIENCE: NOT OPPOSITES
Culture says freedom means no restrictions. The Bible says boundaries protect our freedom.

Two extremes to avoid:
-Legalism – trying to earn God’s love.
-License – treating grace as permission to sin.

True obedience flows from love, not fear.
1. God Doesn’t Want to Take Your Freedom

In the original Greek, both the noun and the verb are built on the same word for freedom.

Meaning? Jesus freed you with freedom so you could live free.

It’s not just a theological concept—it’s your new reality.

Freedom isn’t the opposite of obedience. It’s the environment where obedience can finally flourish.
2. Obedience Is a Response to Grace

Here’s something important to remember:

God never said, “Obey me, and then I’ll love you.”
He said, “I love you—now let’s walk together.”

Think about that. Grace isn’t a transaction. It’s an invitation.
3. Love Leads to Obedience
Let’s revisit the opening question:
 What motivates your obedience?

Fear might work for a while, but it never leads to peace. It leads to hiding, guilt, and burnout.

And the world knows how to sell us fear—whether it’s commercials about safety, health, or approval.
Example: A Car with a back-up camera, Allstate (car insurance)

The business industry has learned, Fear makes us buy things.
Fear of Fault, Fear of status, Fear of Missing Out

However, when fear starts to shape our faith, it pulls us away from God’s heart.
And we know this because we are told in...

2 Timothy 1:7
“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”

Our greatest motivator in the Christian life isn’t fear—it’s love.

1 John 4:19
“We love because He first loved us.”

When we’re rooted in love, obedience stops feeling like a burden—and starts feeling like worship.
Freedom isn't just for me - it's for WE!

Application Point:
Thank God that Jesus freely and perfectly obeyed the law on your behalf—so that you could live in freedom.

Take time this week to reflect:
In your home, workplace, friendships, and walk with God—why do you obey?
Are you motivated by fear, by pressure, by habit… or by love?

Because here’s the truth:
God gave us the freedom to love Him fully, and to love others deeply.
And that’s what the Christian life is really about.

Freedom allows us to respond to love with obedience. That obedience—in love—is what drives us to love one another.

Paul said, “Use your freedom to serve one another in love”.

Isn’t that powerful?
Today’s message, drawn from Galatians 5:1, 13–15, explores the relationship between Christian freedom and obedience, showing that they are not opposites but beautifully connected through God’s love.

-Rather than being driven by fear or the desire for reward, true obedience flows from a heart transformed by grace.
-It would benefit us to reflect on why we obey God and embrace freedom, not as a license to sin, but as the opportunity to follow Jesus and love others joyfully.
-Rooted in the truth that Christ perfectly fulfilled the law on our behalf, we are called to live in the freedom He purchased—serving one another in love and walking in step with the Spirit.
