Prayer Week: Growing in the Practice of Prayer - Phil Kendon

Prayer Week: Growing in the Practice of Prayer - Phil Kendon

When we go to anyone with a request, we go to them in anticipation that they can help. If we need tax advice, we go to a tax consultant. If we need legal services, then we go to a lawyer. If we need instruction about something then we go to someone who is an expert in that thing. We can talk about needing a student loan or a housing loan to many different people, but at the end of the day, we know we have to go to someone with money if we are going to get what we need. If we need a loan – we go to the bank. I want to talk this morning about the ways that God is able to meet our needs with the hope of encouraging us to bring all our requests to him. We are going to do it by looking at one of the psalms – which is like getting a glimpse into the psalmist’s prayer life. We will see how the psalmist thinks of God. By the end of the psalm, we hope to have greater confidence to bring our prayers and requests to God because he is the one who is able to meet our needs.

1. God understands us better than a lover

When we fall in love we hope that this person will get to understand us so well that they know what we are thinking and even what we are about to say. God knows us even better than that.
2. God knows us better than a Father

A Father gets to know our actions and our patterns of behaviour. He knows when we are in a good place and when we are drifting. God knows us better than that.
3. God keeps us from harm better than a bodyguard

A bodyguard covers all angles so the enemy can’t get a good shot. God is more protective than that.
4. God reaches to the furthest limits

There is no height, nor depth, no distance, nor division that can put us outside the reach of God.
5. God guides us like an expert guides mountaineers up Everest

God knows the terrain better than anyone. He leads us in ways that are secure.
6. God’s light penetrates the most oppressive darkness

He sees us even when we feel shrouded by evil or anxiety or depression.
7. God created us with unique purpose

We are fearfully and wonderfully made as he intended us to be and with his purposes in mind.
8. God’s providence secures my life

We can be confident that God has a plan for our lives, and he is able to see that plan fulfilled through his providence. He is the author of our story.
9. God’s wisdom knows no limits

The thoughts of God’s mind are infinite and guarantee the wisdom of his counsel.
10. God stands for what is right

There is no shadow in God. He always speaks what is right, does what is right and fights against evil.
11. God is the most effective personal therapist

A therapist can help you understand yourself better and can help you become a better version of yourself. God examines our lives, identifies weaknesses, and helps us grow better than anyone else ever could.
Let’s Apply It:

Let us present our requests to God because he is able to meet our needs.
