Doers vs. Hearers
James 1:21-25
Pastor Jerry Koller
James 1:21-25
Pastor Jerry Koller
This passage begins with the word “therefore,” which happens to be a conjunction. A conjunction is a connecting word. Here are some connecting points.
• 1st 20 verses deal with trials and adversities, resulting from external and internal circumstances.
• It is connected to asking God for wisdom.
• It is also connected to asking for wisdom in faith
• 1st 20 verses deal with trials and adversities, resulting from external and internal circumstances.
• It is connected to asking God for wisdom.
• It is also connected to asking for wisdom in faith
The idea of this phrase “putting aside” is better understood as “having put aside.” It refers to a past action that has continuing effect.
Filthiness has to do with moral impurity.
Wickedness has to do with corruption and evil in general sense and the deliberate intent to engage in it. It’s a term that reflects every expression of evil.
In the second half of verse 21, James seems to address the other side of the coin....in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21)
• The word for “humility” should be understood as gentleness. A key component of gentleness has to do with being teachable.
• The word for “humility” should be understood as gentleness. A key component of gentleness has to do with being teachable.
Implanted comes from a word whose literal meaning has to do with planting a seed in the ground.
There are two actions that are mentioned in regard to the word: hearing and doing.
• The word translated “prove” means “to become.”
• What you do is a reflection of what you believe.
• The word translated “prove” means “to become.”
• What you do is a reflection of what you believe.
Delude carries with it the idea of being false or dishonest. It can also mean “deceive.”
In verses 23-24, James describes what being deceived or deluded is like.
Merely listening to the word without doing what it says is looking at your face in a mirror. As soon as you go away, your image vanishes, and you quickly forget what you looked like in the mirror.
On the other hand, James points out:
Looking intently means he is carefully examining it. It is a deep reflective examination as opposed to just superficial reading.
• Law is not a reference to the Mosaic Law.
• This is a different law that is characterized as being perfect, which means complete and fully mature.
• The word “perfect” has to do with the idea of something being brought to its end, finished, lacking nothing necessary to completeness.
• It is a word that is used to describe spiritual maturity, moral integrity, and the state of being fully developed in character and faith.
• And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (James 1:4)
• The word “liberty” can also be translated freedom.

Have You Considered?
Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
Pop Cans = Scholarships
Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
