1. Personal Holiness is Important
Romans 13:11-14 (ESV)
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Why is it that striving for holiness (righteousness) often leads people to a spirit of self righteousness?
The enemy of your heart if he can’t keep you from walking with God, he will keep you from being able to walk with others (have an impact others).
Personal Holiness is Important, but holiness is not only personal it’s public.
Righteousness is both vertical and horizontal
Romans 13:10 (ESV)
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

2. Peace Over Preference
A) IT'S OKAY TO BELIEVE DIFFERENTLY
Romans 14:1-3 (ESV)
1 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him.
B) IT'S OKAY TO PRACTICE YOUR FAITH DIFFERENTLY
The issue in this chapter is personal convictions—what you eat, what day you worship, how you practice your faith in disputable matters.
Romans 14:5-6 (ESV)
5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.
Romans 14:7 (ESV)
7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself
C) YOU WILL BE JUDGED FOR HOW YOU LIVE OUT YOUR FAITH
Romans 14:10-12 (ESV)10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”
12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

3. Don’t let your preference stand in the way of your progress.
- Hold yourself extremely accountable to God.
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime...... 14 put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
“Christian freedom is not the right to do what we want, but the power to do what we ought.” – Warren Wiersbe
Romans 14:13 (ESV)13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.
- In holding yourself accountable to God it invites you to live more mindful of others not less mindful.
Romans 14:14-15 (ESV)
14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died.

4. Don’t let your preference stand in the way of someone else’s progress.
Romans 14:16-18 (ESV)
16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men.
Acceptable to God & approved by men.
Don’t let your freedom become a weapon that wound the weak.
People may not value what you stand for, but they should be able to respect how you stand for what you stand for.
Romans 14:19 (ESV)
19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.
“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.” – Rupertus Meldenius
Romans 14:20-21 (ESV)
20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.
