Today is Father’s Day and I want to tell our dads how much they are appreciated. Your influence on your children, grandchildren, neighbor kids, and church kids is so important. You are helping to shape this world one or more kids at a time. We need our godly Dads to stand strong in this ungodly world.
God thinks fathers are important, after all He chose to call Himself Father.
Jesus reminded us of that when He taught the disciples to pray in Luke 11: 1 – 2.

God could have chosen to call himself anything else, but he chose to wear the title as “Father”. He wants this relationship to be personal! That personal relationship begins when we receive Christ as Lord and Savior!
What a privilege it is to be called His children!
When we believe in Christ and what He did for us on the cross and become God’s child and He becomes our Father, what does that mean for us? Well…
Webster’s dictionary defines a father as “a guardian or protector.”
Maybe you’re here this morning carrying heaviness in your heart because you’ve never had this father figure in your life. In your heart, you desire a guardian or protector over your life. We can take comfort in what Psalm 68: 4 - 5 says…

We can read many Biblical accounts of how God protected different people, as well as, the whole nation of Israel. And I am sure there are many of us here who can attest to God’s protection in their lives. What better protection can any of us have then to have our Almighty God as our protector. After all He created all there is.
As Dads we need to be protectors and influencers of our children too, spiritually and physically.
The Woman at the Well and Jesus had a conversation about a father’s protection and influence in John 4: 19 – 20.

The Samaritan fathers had taught their children to worship God in a particular place and the Jewish fathers taught their children to worship God in a completely different place. The children of both groups, who had physical and spiritual ties to the original Hebrew father, Abraham, had taught their children so well that they both worshipped as they were taught. Unfortunately, both groups were not worshipping God the way He wanted them to worship. What was Jesus’ response?
First Jesus lets her know that her ancestral fathers had taught their children wrong. The Jews knew that salvation was coming through them. But both Samaritans and Jews needed to learn that place is not what is most important to God. So, Jesus described the basis for true worship: it is not found in places and trappings, but in spirit and in truth.
To worship in spirit means you are concerned with spiritual realities, not so much with places or outward sacrifices, cleansings, and trappings.
To worship in truth means you worship according to the whole counsel of God’s word.
It also means that you come to God in truth, not in pretense or a mere display of spirituality.

It is important as Dad’s that we teach our children God’s truth from His Word, not other sources.
That is what went wrong with the Samaritans. The Northern Israelite Tribes had become mixed with other cultures when the Assyrians conquered them and became known as the Samaritans. As time went by, they added other cultures’ beliefs in with theirs. They didn’t stick with God’s original words. At the same time the Jews in the South became very focused on rules and traditions and lost the true meaning of God’s Words.
When we are listening more to people’s ideas or following man-made traditions more than God’s Words, we will get off track too.

We need to teach our kids to worship in spirit and truth, depending on God’s Words to guide us. This will protect them spiritually and physically. And perhaps we will influence and protect coming generations well beyond us by doing so. The Samaritans and Jews both influenced their children and the generations to come, but in the wrong way. I don’t think any of us would like to see that in our families. That’s why it is important for us to make sure we are following the Lord and His Word and teaching our kids correctly.
It’s never too late to be a father that protects and influences his kids, like God our Heavenly Father does for us!
