Proverbs 13:22
“Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren but the sinner’s wealth passes to the Godly.”
Discipline = Love in Action
Discipline: The self control that is gained by requiring that rules or orders be obeyed, and the ability to keep working at something that is difficult
If we are truly committed to fulfilling The Great Commission, it is vital to understand the discipline is a key component of discipleship
Hebrews 12:10-11
“For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, that we might share in His holiness.No discipline is enjoyable while it’s happening- it is painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.”
Discipline = Justice
Discipling with integrity creates disciples who feel safe and can learn that we are trustworthy and then understand that God is trustworthy
Biblical discipline is an expression of love
Hebrews 12:6-7
“For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and punishes each he accepts as his child.”
Biblical discipline will often be an inconvenience to the parent or discipler. You have to be willing to give up something you really want in order to show that you keep your word and are trustworthy
2nd part of our definition of Discipline: The ability to keep working at something that is difficult
“Codependency is when you do something for someone else when they can do it for themselves and you rob them of their self-esteem”
Lack of discipline results in a lack of identity and belonging
Hebrews 12:8
“If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.”
Correction without love, done in anger is what turns discipline into abuse and produces sin
Proverbs 15:5
“Only a fool despise a parent’s discipline; whoever learns from correction is wise.”
Proverbs 15:31
“If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.”
