First Fruits
James 1:17 & 18
Pastor Jerry Koller
"I'm against sin. I'll kick it as long as I've got a foot, and I'll fight it as long as I've got a fist. I'll butt it as long as I've got a head. I'll bite it as long as I've got a tooth. And when I'm old and fistless and footless and toothless, I'll gum it till I go home to glory, and it goes home to perdition." ~ Billy Sunday
In verse 13, James pointed out that temptations to sin do not come from God. In verse 17, James mentions something that does come from God. Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above.
• We need to praise God, not blame God.
Every good thing given… This has to do with both the gift and the act of giving.
The phrase, Father of lights was an ancient Jewish title for God that recognizes He alone is Creator, that God alone is the source of all light – physical – intellectual – moral – and spiritual, and He does not change—which is what the phrase no variation or shifting shadow means.
Once we start to doubt the truth about God’s goodness, we will be attracted to temptations, to things outside the will of God, things that are harmful and deadly.
4 Facts Regarding the Goodness of God:
• Whatever God Gives Is Good.
• The Way God Gives Is Good.
• God Is Constantly Giving.
• God Does Not Change.
In verse 18, we see the most wonderful gift God gives which is a perfect illustration of His goodness.
4 Answers to 4 Questions Regarding the New Birth:
Who Does It?
In the exercise of His will… (James 1:18a)
• Regeneration is wholly the act of God, the Father of Lights. Salvation is a result of God’s choice.
What Is It?
He brought us forth (18b)
• “Brought forth” comes from a word that emphasize the origin or source of something being produced or brought into existence.
• Another name for this is Regeneration which is giving birth to a new spiritual life.
How Does It Happen?
The answer is, by the word of truth. (James 18c)
Why Is It Done?
...so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures. (James 18d)
APPLICATION
In times of trial and adversity that are a result of us making poor decisions or choices, ask God for wisdom to go through them. Don’t blame God, for they are not His fault.
Keep in mind the essential truths regarding God.
• He is not the source of evil, nor does He tempt anyone with evil.
• Whatever God gives is good because He is good.
• The way God gives is good.
• God does not change.
We need to praise God, not blame Him.

4th of July Freedom Celebration

We are SO excited to host this event again this year! To celebrate Independence Day, we will be giving away free hot dogs and sharing the freedom we have in Christ with our community…don’t miss our annual event!
• Help is needed to LOAD THE VAN after church on Sunday, June 29 and to load hot dogs and water bottles into coolers during the day on Wednesday, July 2.
• MONETARY SUPPORT NEEDED...We are hoping to give away at least 1000 free hot dogs at this event. If you would like to make a donation towards the purchase of hot dogs or supplies, please leave it in the jar in the foyer or note “Hot Dogs” in the memo of your check.
• HELP NEEDED @ EVENT...It takes a lot of servants to make this event successful. Please bring a friend and sign-up to help! We will need people to set-up, cook, serve, and clean-up. Sign-up online or at the Welcome Center!
• For questions or more information, contact the church office.

Hearing Assistance Devices Available

We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.

Pop Cans = Scholarships

Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
