CRAFTING A FAMILY CULTURE

SCRIPTURE
“You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. You must not imitate their way of life. Do not follow their practices. You must obey My laws and be careful to follow My decrees. I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 18:3-4

Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2

God has always wanted His people to be distinct from the world.

Culture isn’t primarily crafted from the White House, but from our house and God’s house.

HOW JESUS CREATED CULTURE

Jesus created a family culture through teaching.

He taught actively.

He taught passively.

Jesus created a family culture through time together.

He appointed twelve that they might be with Him. Mark 3:14

He gave quantity time.

He gave quality time.

Jesus created a family culture through talking.

Communication is about listening to understand and speaking to be understood.

He had confronting conversations.

We must strike the balance between over-confronting and under-confronting.

Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking, “Why are you doing that?” 1 Kings 1:6

He had affirming conversations.

Remember Gottoman’s Ratio!
He had normal conversations.

He had difficult conversations.

Mega-conversations should consist of many micro-conversations.

Jesus created a family culture through established terms.

He talked about what they do.

He talked about who they are.

Jesus created a family culture through thanksgiving.

He gave thanks in provision.

He gave thanks in pain.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

An attitude of gratitude will have a dramatic impact on the culture of your home.

Jesus created a family culture through toiling together.

He served the disciples.

When I am served, it provokes me to serve. This cycle should be unending in family.

He served with the disciples.

Jesus created a family culture through traditions.

He instituted short-term traditions.

He instituted long-term traditions.

Jesus created a family culture through touch.

He gave appropriate touch to others.

He took the children in His arms, placed His hands on them and blessed them. Mark 10:16

Sometimes our people need us to touch them in their mess.

Chapman says the most common language for children to receive love is physical touch.

Failure to Thrive is real.

He received appropriate touch from others.

Jesus created a family culture through trials.

He showed vulnerability in trials.

He showed stability in trials.

Even in profound grief, Jesus provided strength for His people.

Jesus created a family culture through tenderness.

He was tender to forgive.

He was tender to forget.

“I…will blot out your sins…and will never think of them again.” Isaiah 43:25
