Carried Away & Enticed
James 1:13-16
Pastor Jerry Koller
James 1:13-16
Pastor Jerry Koller
• The Greek word translated “tempted” in verse 13 is the same word that we found translated in verses 2 and verse 12 as “trial(s).”
• The primary idea here is the solicitation to do evil.
• The primary idea here is the solicitation to do evil.
Two important universal truths about temptation:
• Everyone faces temptation.
• People will generally try and blame someone else for actions.
• Everyone faces temptation.
• People will generally try and blame someone else for actions.
Example of Adam & Eve:
Adam deflects the blame.
Eve also tries to deflect the blame.
Relationship Between God and Sin:
• ...God cannot be tempted by evil, (James 1:13b)
• ...God cannot be tempted by evil, (James 1:13b)
• ...and He Himself does not tempt anyone. (James 1:13c)
Whirlpool of Sin:
The phrase, "But each one is tempted..." reminds us that each one of us at some point in time will be tempted in some manner to sin.
Each one is tempted "when he is carried away and enticed"...
• He is to be enticed with some kind of bait.
• He is to be enticed with some kind of bait.
What causes someone to take the bait? "…his own lust…"
• Lust is a passionate yearning or desire for something or someone.
• Lust is a passionate yearning or desire for something or someone.
When temptation and lust interact with one another, when they join, a conception occurs much the same way a conception occurs in a human relationship.
“Sin denied dulls the conscience.”
How Our Conscience Can Become Seared:
• You Compromise It.
• You Callous It.
• You Sear It.
• You Compromise It.
• You Callous It.
• You Sear It.
James does not want such a thing to happen to his brothers and sisters in Christ. That is why he cautions them:
APPLICATION
When faced with temptation, F.L.E.E.
• Feel the danger.
• Leave the area.
• Experience God’s pleasure.
• Establish Boundaries.
• Feel the danger.
• Leave the area.
• Experience God’s pleasure.
• Establish Boundaries.

Happy Birthday!

Church Workdays: Sunday, 6/29
Please mark your calendars and plan to join us after worship for our Church Workday as we do some spring cleaning and maintenance around our campus. Jobs will be both indoors and outside, so please dress accordingly. Lunch will be provided after worship, and we'll work until 2:00pm. For questions or more information, contact the church office.
Hearing Assistance Devices Available
We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.
Have You Considered?
Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
Pop Cans = Scholarships
Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
