Notes:
Story 1: Joseph—From the Pit to the Promise
Let’s go back to Genesis 37. Picture a teenager named Joseph, standing in a field, wearing a coat that screams his father’s favor. His brothers? They’re not fans. Jealousy burns in their eyes. Before Joseph knows it, they’ve ripped that coat off his back, thrown him into a pit, and sold him into slavery for 20 pieces of silver.

Imagine the dust settling in that pit. The silence. The betrayal. Joseph could’ve screamed, “Where is God’s love now?”

Fast forward. He’s in Egypt, serving in Potiphar’s house. Things are looking up—until a false accusation lands him in prison. Shackles. Darkness. Years tick by. “Where is God’s love now?”

But if you know Joseph’s story, you know the ending. God lifts him from the prison to the palace, second-in-command of Egypt. And when he stands face-to-face with his brothers years later, he doesn’t curse them. He doesn’t curse God. He says, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20).

Story 2: Perpetua—Climbing the Ladder in the Arena
Now let’s travel to 203 A.D., to a dusty amphitheater in Carthage. A young woman named Perpetua stands in the center. She’s 22 years old, a new Christian, a new mother. Her father, desperate, begs her to renounce her faith to save her life. The Roman governor demands she offer a pinch of incense to the emperor. She refuses.

Perpetua is sentenced to die. Wild beasts. The sword. The crowd roars for blood. Her list? Persecution. Danger. Sword. She’s facing it all.

But Perpetua kept a diary—still preserved today. In it, she writes of a vision she had the night before her execution. She saw a golden ladder stretching from earth to heaven, guarded by a dragon. She stepped forward, unafraid, and began to climb. At the top, she entered a garden, and Jesus Himself greeted her, saying, “You are healed.”

Perpetua faced the beasts the next day. She faced the sword. But she didn’t face them alone. She climbed that ladder, not to escape her pain, but to meet her Savior in it. Her suffering wasn’t a sign of God’s absence—it was a stage for His presence.

What’s the arena you’re standing in?
