“Jacob wanted nothing except to be in a position for God to bless him. He was willing to stay but not be further indebted to the scheming and selfish Laban. He offered Laban a plan that could bless him while costing Laban nothing. He would continue to care for Laban’s animals, as he had been doing. His pay would consist of animals not yet born, animals which would seem the less desirable to Laban because of their markings and color.”

“No husbandry manual teaches that animals that breed in the sight of peeled branches produce speckled offspring. Jacob was attempting to selectively breed speckled sheep, but God was the one supernaturally guiding the process. In the end, the weak sheep belonged to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob (30:42), and Jacob became very rich (30:43). This is a reminder that it doesn’t matter how good a deal seems in human terms; the man on whose side God stands will have the better deal.”

“We may note Jacob’s principles for prosperity: Don’t make wealth your goal; Jacob’s real goal was to return home (Genesis 30:25-26). Don’t be afraid to work for others and try to increase their wealth before or as you work to increase your own wealth (Genesis 30:27). Work hard, dedicating yourself to your employer’s success (Genesis 30:26, 31:38-42). Trust God (Genesis 30:31-33).
