Mother’s Day: Fourfold Purpose

Mother’s Day is the third most celebrated holiday globally, after Christmas and Easter. In 1908, Anna M. Jarvis launched the first official celebration in Grafton, West Virginia, to honour her late mother. She defined four clear purposes:

To honour our mothers
To bring families together
To make us better children
To brighten the lives of good mothers

How can you live out these four purposes in your own family and community?

History’s Best‑Known Women

Women of courage have shaped history and faith. Consider three examples:

1. Mary, Mother of Jesus
Venerated since the earliest Church, Mary’s faith made her the vessel for the Messiah.
2. Wu Zetian
China’s only female emperor (690–705 AD), who transformed government and culture.
3. Catherine the Great
Empress of Russia (1762–1796), modernizer, patron of the arts, and empire‑builder.

Which qualities of these women inspire you most?

Do You Have the Ability to Say “YES”?
Saying “yes” to the crowd is very different from saying yes to God’s call and convictions.

Are we a yes-person or one who has the capacity to say “yes”?

Mary set her heart to “YES.”

“Don’t be frightened, Mary,” the angel told her, “For God has decided to bless you! … And he will reign over Israel forever; his kingdom will never end!”
– Luke 1:30–33 (NLT)

Mary’s response:
“For with God nothing will be impossible.”
Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”
Luke 1:37–38 NKJV

Mary set her heart to “YES.”
She worshipped in faith—without a plan, without full understanding, but fully trusting.

The Magnificat - The Prayer - Praise Song of Mary

“Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me.
He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him. His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.
He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands. He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful. For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever.”
(Lk 1: 46-55) NLT

The M.A.R.Y. Framework

Reflect on Mary’s journey through this acronym:

M – Mary – Maidservant
Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord!
Let it be to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38
- Mary’s title “maidservant” signifies complete humility and submission.
- Though a teenager of low social standing, she responded to God’s call without pride or hesitation.
- Her identity was defined not by prestige or performance but her heart posture to serve “I am the Lord’s servant.”

A – Available
Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord!
Let it be to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38
- Availability requires surrender: Mary entrusted her body, reputation, and future to God’s plan.
- She did not negotiate terms or request details; she simply offered herself... “whatever He wants.”
- Availability means saying “yes” even when we cannot foresee the outcome.

R – Reflective & Responsive
“Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often.”
– Luke 2:19 (NLT)
- Mary reflected on Gods words, allowing Scripture to shape her understanding and posture.
- Reflective responsiveness calls us to meditate on God’s promises and then act in obedience.

Y – Yes
- Marys “yes” was an affirmation of trust: she believed in God’s character and timing.
- Saying “yes” opens doors for God’s transformative work in our lives—marriage, motherhood, mission—whatever He calls us to.
- A “yes” heart embraces both joys and sacrifices, recognising God’s greater purpose beyond personal comfort.
“Jesus said, ‘What is impossible with men is possible with God.’”

Faith based Courage
True courage is moving forward despite fear because God is with us.
- Don’t worry—worship.
- Don’t panic—pray and praise
“For with God nothing will be impossible.”Luke 1:37 NKJV

How will you worship when fear arises?

Would you like to say “yes” today—to follow God without holding back?
