Big Idea: Parenting is hard work, but thankfully God gives us some principles to show us the way.
I. The Effort (vv. 12-16)
A. There is a deep-seated tension in our culture today regarding
parenting, especially motherhood. Trying to juggle work, home,
and personal lives can be exhausting and lead to unrealistic
expectations to meet up to some worldly standard.

and personal lives can be exhausting and lead to unrealistic
expectations to meet up to some worldly standard.
B. As such, there is no doubt that a parent’s efforts can often feel:
1. Unnoticed.
2. Unappreciated (v. 16).
3. Unrewarded (cf. 2 Tim. 4:6-8).
C. Parenting today can seem like we are trying to meet some
Hallmark Channel expectation. But the real story is that family
life is often messy. What we really need is wisdom and direction
from God’s Word to light our path (cf. Ps. 119:105).

II. The Example (vv. 12-17)
A. Like many things in the Christian life, parenting is an
opportunity to see Christ at work in and through our lives.
Moms and dads have a moment in time to set the example of:

1. God’s love (vv. 12-14; cf. Jn. 13:34-35).
2. God’s character (vv. 12-13).
3. God’s sacrifice (v. 13).
B. By its very nature, parenting is an unselfish endeavor that often
clashes with our cultural mores. As such, we need to look to
God for our provision and power and remember to:

God for our provision and power and remember to:
1. Put on Christ (vv. 15-16) – Let His peace rule in your heart.
2. Put on love (v. 14; cf. Rom. 13:8-10) – Let God’s love be
the abiding principle that guides everything else.

3. Put on perspective (v. 17) – Do everything as unto the Lord.
C. Parenting is hard work, but it’s also important work, as today’s
parents are raising the next generation of disciples who will
impact the world for Messiah Jesus.
