What About the Sabbath?, Text: Hebrews 3:16-19, 4:9,10
Today’s question: In the Old Testament, God’s people were commanded to observe the Sabbath. Is that still an active command for us today?
Exodus 20:8, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
Hebrews 4:9, …There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God…
1) Sabbath rest = salvation.
Hebrews 3:19, So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
Hebrews 4:9, So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God…
Hebrews 4:10, …For whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
I Peter 1:20,21, He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Colossians 2:16,17, Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
Romans 14:5, One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

2) Sabbath rest = surrender.
Deuteronomy 5:12-15, “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work… 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
Mark 2:27,28, And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
I Peter 1:14-16, As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Question: How do we observe the Sabbath today?
Answer: We rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross for salvation, and we live holy lives in response to our salvation.

3) Sabbath rest = sanity.
