The Waters of Creation - (Genesis 1:1-2) Creation was born out of water with the Spirit of God hovering. We begin as a new creation with the water of Baptism, with the Holy Spirit as witness. (Matthew 3:13-17; John 3:5; 2 Corinthians 5:17)
The Waters of the Flood. (Genesis 6:9-18 ) The flood waters cleansed the world of wickedness leaving only Noah and his family of 8, who was found righteous. When we are baptized the water cleanses us of wickedness, and we are found righteous before God. (1 Peter 3:20-21; Acts 22:16)
The Waters of the Red Sea. (Exodus) As the Hebrews passed through the water they were delivered from slavery to Egypt and set free to worship God. As we pass through the waters of baptism we are delivered from slavery to sin (our Egypt) and set free in Christ. (1 Corinthians 10:1-2; Galatians 5:1; John 8:36)
Ritual Cleansing, Set Apart for Service. (Exodus 29:4; 30:17-21; 1 Kings 7:23-26) Before the priests were released to serve in the temple, they were required to bathe themselves. We bathe ourselves now one time with the waters of baptism and become priests, and we become the temple. (1 Cor 3:16; 1 Peter 2:9)
Water is a witness. (1 John 5:8)
Water witnessed creation.
Water witnessed judgment.
Water witnessed deliverance.
Water witnessed cleansing.
Water has memory.
Clearly water does not have human memory, but water cannot be destroyed therefore it remembers in a scientific sense. (Tim Jones)
The waters of Baptism don’t just cleanse, it serves as a witness of all history of the creation, fall of man, and redemption, marking a new birth and a new identity. It remembers like a living testimony the works of God. There was water before time. (Psalm 29:3-4 (waters amplify God’s voice; Psalm 42:7; Psalm 77:16; Psalm 114:3)
Conclusion:
How to baptize:
In the name of the Father Son, Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:18-20) The triune God as a witness.
By immersion. (Mark 1:4-5; Mark 1:9-10; John 3:22-23)
The word baptize literally means to immerse. The clear biblical pattern is immersion. This is not just legalism this is symbolism. As we saw earlier the earth was immersed in water TWICE (Heavens released the waters that were separated for the flood). While they walked on dry ground via a miracle the Hebrews were immersed into the sea. The priests would immerse themselves before their service.
The symbolism is even deeper than that. (Romans 6:3-4; Colossians 2:11-16) This is a public identification with Christ and a symbol of your death, burial and resurrection into the newness of life.
Immediately after conversion. (Acts 8:36-38; Acts 10:44-48; Acts 16:30-33)
While baptism does not save you, it is the first action of a believe and symbolizes the washing of your sin. It would be like someone making a down payment on a home and never paying the mortgage.
When you getting baptized you are saying:
