Today's Sermon

Sermon: The challenge to examine our relationships: Do we practice love or hate?
Passage: 1 John 3:10-18
Pastor Gus Gill
Introduction
1. The problems that the church of John's time faced, and that the church of our time faces.

A. Having a misplaced identity.
B. Believing the false teachers. Romans 5:20-21; Romans 6:1-4
C. Not understanding the gravity of our sin. Psalm 51:1-4, 17
2. The test: Are you practicing righteousness that includes loving others, or are you not practicing righteousness?

A. How to practice righteousness. Romans 1:16-17
B. To impute Christ’s righteousness to those who live by faith.
3. The results of a lack of love.

A. Not being of God; abiding in death; committing murder—which all lead to hell.
B. False teachers of John's time hated those who rejected their heretical teaching.
C. A biblical example of hate: Cain and Abel. Genesis 4:1-8; Matthew 5:21-22
D. The key is what a person practices; it's a heart issue.
4. The results of loving our brothers and sisters.

A. Love distinguishes our identity as God's children.
B. Our love for one another identifies us as Christ's disciples. John 13:34-35
C. The Holy Spirit pours out God's love to us. Romans 5:5
D. We live an abundant life of love. John 10:10
Application Thoughts and Questions:

1. Are you praying for more opportunities to love others, or do you respond internally with frustration toward others’ needs? James 2:14-17

2. The gospel of Jesus teaches that the rich man of faith is to be rich in good deeds. Are you rich in good deeds or more proud of being rich? 1 Timothy 6:17-19

3. Are there people in your life that have hurt you whom you have grown to hate, people who you want nothing to do with or even to pray for?

4. Are you in Christian fellowship enough to even know the needs of others? Titus 2:11-14
