Our Big Idea:
The King comes humbly into Jerusalem to make peace with God possible

3 Aspects of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem:
1) 28-36 – He rides on a donkey meek and lowly
2) 37-40 – He receives jubilant praise
3) 41-44 – He mourns for Jerusalem

“The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the two main hinges upon
which the door of salvation turns. He came into the world on purpose to give his life a ransom; so, he had lately said in Matthew 20:28. And therefore the history of his sufferings, even unto death, and his rising again,
is more particularly recorded by all the evangelists than any other part of His story.”

“The choice of a donkey revealed his life and ministry in two ways. First, it identified him with kings in the royal line of David, and especially David himself, because the donkey was regarded as a royal animal before and during David’s reign. Second, the use of a donkey speaks of Jesus’ inner spirit. As Zechariah (who lived long after David) said, Jesus was “humble and mounted on a donkey.” This was Christ’s intrinsic attitude in life.”

“He knew that the time had come when He was to die for sinners on the cross. His work as the great prophet, so far as His earthly ministry was concerned, was almost finished and completed. His work as the sacrifice for sin and the substitute for sinners remained to be accomplished. Before giving Himself up as a sacrifice, He desired to draw the attention of the whole Jewish nation to Himself. The Lamb of God was about to be slain! The great sin offering was about to be killed! It was fit that the eyes of all Israel should be fixed upon Him. This great work of redemption was not to be done in a corner.

“Jesus wept terribly over Jerusalem! This was and is the heart of a new kind of king. It is the heart of God. The body was human, but the heart was divine. This is how Jesus Christ and God the Father and the blessed Holy Spirit sorrow over hearts that miss their “day” and “the things that make for peace”– namely, repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Will he weep over you?”
