Big Idea: Palm Sunday reminds us that God keeps all His promises through Messiah Jesus.
I. The Power of Expectation (vv. 12-13)
A. The crowds on this day are filled with excitement, and rightly
so, for the Messiah has arrived (v. 13). However, the crowd’s
expectation differed from what Jesus came to do, and when it
becomes clear Jesus wasn’t going to do what the crowd wanted,
they would later sing a different tune (cf. Jn. 19:14-16).
B. The people were focused on their external condition, but Jesus
is shining a light on their spiritual need. We see:
1. Jesus came to set us free from sin’s bondage and Satan’s
deception (cf. Jn. 10:9-11; Jn. 12:27; 1 Jn. 3:8).
2. Jesus challenges our attitudes and traditions that take
precedence over His purpose and Word (cf. Matt. 16:21-23).
C. There is power in expectation in that it often colors the way we
think God should act in our lives. But when we recognize Jesus’
mission and the humility in which He carried it out, our
expectations are transformed because we see that Jesus gives us
something better (v. 16).
II. The Power of a Promise Kept (vv. 14-19)
A. As much as Palm Sunday reminds us of the power of
expectation, it also reminds us of the power of a promise kept.
Jesus wasn’t just riding into Jerusalem to celebrate Passover; He
was fulfilling a promise!
B. Palm Sunday reminds us that:
1. God keeps His promises (cf. Zech. 9:9; Isa. 62:11) – Unlike
an often fickle world, God keeps His Word.
2. Jesus is our rightful king (v. 15; cf. 1 Tim. 6:13-15) – Jesus
is worthy of our worship, praise, and loyalty.
C. Practically speaking, Palm Sunday encourages us to live a life
free from the fear and worries so prevalent in the world (vv. 15-
17). It reminds us to worship Jesus as our one and only King
who, out of His great love for us, offers us redemption and
hope, because He keeps His promises (v. 15).
