During Lent we are engaging in a new series called Church Words. The goal is to understand what these words mean: Evangelism, Sin, Regeneration, Salvation, Sanctification, Redemption. This week we look at the word Sin.

When we look at the world, we see beauty but also brokenness. We see comedy and tragedy. No matter how you term it, it seems like there is something off in the human heart. Some may have a visceral reaction to the word sin. Some have thought that our major problem is lack of education and the more education, the more people would choose the good. The evidence reveals the more eduction we have received has not changed the violence and injustice in the world. We need help outside of us.

Popular definitions of sin includeL: to miss the mark, to err, transgression or rebellion. All human beings are infected with sin. Sin is more than actions; sin is something we all have. We think we know what is best with our lives rather than God.

Three Dimension of Sin
1) Sin Done by Us - These are actions we have taken.
2) Sin Done to Us - We have all been sinned against and wounded. This often lead to reacting back with sin actions.
3) Sin Done around Us - This is the environment we live in and affects our soul.

The Good news is that Jesus came to save us from our sins. His name literally means he will save his people from their sins. He is the great Physician of our soul.

Author and Teacher Robert Mulholland identifies four levels of sin.
1) Gross Sin - These are major sins that ought to go early in our lives with God. See a list in Galatians 5:19-21
2) Conscious Sin - These are socially acceptable but not helpful. Examples include rudeness, gossip, crude humor, materialsm to name a few.
3) Unconscious Sin - These are things we are not aware of such as ignoring the poor, our defensiveness, how we come off to people, our motivations for actions.
4) Attachments - These are called Idols in the Bible. We belleve without these idols we will not be happy. These are not bad things but often are good things. Examples include family, career, status, children, health. Happiness can only be found in God.

Another way to think of sin is that we all have brokenness that needs to be healed. I Peter 2:24 says he bore our sins on the cross and by his wounds we are healed. Jesus died to make me right with God and to heal my soul. As I pursue God, I will experience joy and happiness.

Personal Application
1) Come to Jesus - Admit that you have brokenness in your life that only can can heal. Offer yourself to him. Be honest where you need his healing, where you have strayed from him.
2) Practice Confession - As they say, "We are only as sick as our secrets". One of the hardest things to do is to adit to another human being where you need deep healing. Bring things out into the light. The enemy hates the light. Find someone you trust, who will love you to tell you the truth but also give you the gift of fogginess from God. Let home speak Jesus forgiveness over you.

Jesus came not only to get you into heaven but to have sin dissipate in your life so you can be truly happy. He came to kill sin in our lives. Why? Because Jesus loves each one of us infinitely more than we can imagine.
