The word “preeminent” means “the highest rank” or “greatest importance.”
The author has already given us a picture of Christ’s greatness in contrast to the angels, but now the author turns to a comparison between Jesus and the greatest Israelite, Moses.
We place a level of importance on everything in life.
Everything that is a part of who we are is weighed out in our decisions.
The reality is that we often fall victim to the urgent and unimportant.
How important is Jesus to you?
The writer of Hebrews is trying to get us to “consider” the importance of Christ in our lives.
And as we answer that question for ourselves this morning, we are going to be challenged to begin to prioritize our lives around Him.
Moses was revered as the greatest of all Hebrews, and the greatest man of history.
He became the deliverer of his people through an incredible display of God’s power.
As Israel’s greatest prophet, he didn’t need dreams or visions, he spoke directly to God Himself.
Moses functioned as the greatest apostle and priest of his people.
If the author is going to show Christ as preeminent, then he must show Jesus's superiority to Moses.
As great as Moses was, Jesus is far greater in every way.
He is God’s final word to human beings, superior to Moses, the prophets, or angels.
Moses never entered the Promised Land because of His failures.
But because of Christ’s faithfulness, He has become the Way into the presence of God.
Jesus is the fulfillment of the shadow of the OT and of the Law.
He is both God's representative among humanity and our representative in the presence of God.
And because of this, the author of Hebrews exhorts the church to “consider Jesus."
It does not mean to simply think about Jesus, but to carefully weigh the character of who He is according to how He is revealed in Scripture.
We must consider Christ’ importance as it relates to our daily life.

Discussion Questions to Take Home:
In what ways do we sometimes fall into the trap of prioritizing the "urgent but unimportant" over our relationship with Christ?

Many people have different views of Jesus (teacher, prophet, co-pilot, etc.). Which incomplete views of Jesus do you most commonly encounter?

Pastor Paul mentioned that Moses' life was "one large arrow pointing to the coming Messiah." What aspects of your life point others to Christ?

What's the difference between knowing about Jesus' preeminence intellectually and living it out practically?

How might our lives look different if we truly considered Jesus as preeminent in our community, character, and communication?

What is a Catechism?
A Catechism is a structured teaching tool, typically presented in a question-and-answer format, that outlines the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith.
The word “catechism” literally means “oral instruction.”
The reason we learn theology and doctrine is so that we can know God more deeply, enjoy Him more fully, and walk with Him more obediently.

Isn’t a Catechism a Catholic thing?
While Catholic’s do use a catechism, The New City Catechism is based on three historical, Protestant catechisms: John Calvin's Geneva Catechism, The Westminster Shorter and Larger Catechisms, and The Heidelberg Catechism.
The New City Catechism is a modern resource that summarizes Christian doctrines and includes questions and answers, Bible verses, commentaries, and prayers (the mobile app is available on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices).
