A Week of Prayer & Fasting - Phil Kendon

A Week of Prayer & Fasting - Phil Kendon

We are entering a week of prayer and fasting. The idea is to set ourselves apart for the week and to lift up our prayers and requests to God. In fasting, we give up something important to us to show that we are dependent on God for everything. We will have 5 daily themes throughout the week for you to focus on as you pray and fast.

Sunday 9:30 AM

Day 1 - Fasting to Win the Battle

1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV)
Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

As we focus on fighting the good fight of the faith, ask God to help you and others to:

- Resist temptation (Matthew 4:1-11)
- Deliverance from spiritual oppression and heaviness (Ephesians 6:12)
- Courage to overcome intimidation (1 Samuel 17)
Day 2 - Fasting to Topple an Idol

1 Samuel 5:2–4 (NIV)
Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.

As we focus on toppling idols, ask God to help you and others to:

- Offer the best of our time, money, and energy to him first (Matthew 22:37-38)
- Set us free from slavery to idols (Galatians 4:8-9)
- Turn to God first when we are in trouble (Isaiah 31:1)
Day 3 - Fasting for a Miracle

Matthew 9:20–21 (NIV)
Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

As we focus on impossible things, ask God to help you and others to:

- Experience spiritual, emotional, and physical healing (Mark 1:32-34)
- Be fruitful in our areas of physical and spiritual barrenness (1 Samuel 1:19-20)
- Open doors that we cannot open (Revelation 3:8)
Day 4 - Fasting for the Reach of the Gospel

Acts 13:1–3 (NIV)
Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

As we focus on the reach of the gospel, ask God to help us to:

- Be a bold witness to those around us (Matthew 5:14-16)
- Plant new churches in new regions (2 Corinthians 10:15-16)
- Raise up leaders who will care for the people (Matthew 9:35-38)
Day 5 - Fasting for the Nation

Jeremiah 29:4–7 (NIV)
This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

As we focus on our country, ask God to:

- Help us love our country and be a positive influence in it (Jeremiah 29:4-7)
- Help our leaders to govern with wisdom and skill (1 Timothy 2:1-7)
- Help us build strong marriages and families as a foundation for a healthy society (Jeremiah 29:4-7)
