An Ambitious Goal
1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
Pastor Jerry Koller
1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
Pastor Jerry Koller
These four verses can be divided into two parts. They can be divided into how to live a life that is pleasing to God among themselves, among the brethren (vss. 9-10), and how to live a life that is pleasing to God among those who do not believe (vss. 11-12).
A paralipsis is a technique that skips a concise treatment of a subject as a way of emphasizing its importance.
Brotherly love is the kind of love that binds people together.
· In the New Testament, this blood relationship, this family concept, is used in relation to the family of God.
· It was radical call for a commitment to love and serve one another regardless of social or ethnic backgrounds.
· Brotherly love was essential for survival.

· Brotherly love was essential for survival.
Living a life that is pleasing to God is a process that needs to continue. The same holds true in regard to loving one another.
In the next two verses, Paul shifts his focus from how to live a life that is pleasing to God among brothers and sisters in Christ to how to live a life that is pleasing to God among those who are not believers in Christ.
· The verb that is translated make it your ambition conveys the idea of making it one's aim or plan to achieve something honorable or praiseworthy.
· In the culture of the day, ambition was often associated with the pursuit of honor and recognition within society. For those in Christ, it seeks godly objectives that will be pleasing to God

· Living quietly has to do with the idea of being quiet or at rest, both in a physical and in a spiritual sense.
· It implies a state of tranquility and calmness.
· To the Greek and Roman minds, it was often associated with inner peace and self-control.

The third objective builds upon the previous two: work with your own hands.
· It is a reference to manual labor.

Breakdown:
· When one works, one is not idle.
· Working was a way of contributing to the community or filling one’s role in society.
· In the Jewish culture, work was a mandate from God.

The phrase “with your” directs one to their personal responsibility.
The word own reinforces this personal responsibility.
The word own reinforces this personal responsibility.
Hands can literally refer to the body part of the same name. Metaphorically speaking the phrase can mean by your own, personal effort.
In his second letter to the saints at Thessalonica, in chapter 3, Paul addresses those who choose to be idle (verses 6-15).
In the next verse (1 Thess. 4:12), Paul explains the reason behind this instruction: ...so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. (1 Thess. 4:12 NIV)
...so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one. (ESV)
...so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need. (NASB)
...so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one. (ESV)
...so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need. (NASB)
The word “proper” has to do with having and showing a high or elevated character.
Good name is a reference to one’s reputation. Living properly before outsiders also deals with one’s reputation.
APPLICATION
We are to love the brethren—our fellow believers—those in the family of God—those believers who make up the church visible.
· We can do this because the Holy Spirit will help us.
· The Holy Spirit has poured out the love of God into our hearts.
· May our love for one another continue to grow more and more.
· We can do this because the Holy Spirit will help us.
· The Holy Spirit has poured out the love of God into our hearts.
· May our love for one another continue to grow more and more.
As for how we are to live our lives among those who are not in Christ, we are to live properly.
· We are to live in such a way that no one can accuse us of wrongdoing.
· We are to do so with an eye on the possibility that someone may question us as to why we are the way we are.
· We are to do so in preparation should someone ask us to explain why we have this hope in our hearts.

Happy Birthday!

Have You Considered?
Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
Pop Cans = Scholarships
Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!

· Bruce and Vasha Ferguson are recovering from a car accident that occurred 1/22. Both of them are quite sore from the deployment of airbags, but praise the Lord that neither suffered any major injuries. Bruce also continues to be sick with the flu. Please pray for healing for both of them and that they will be able to find a vehicle replacement fairly soon.
· Beth Bocock has been released from the hospital and is recovering at her parents’ home in NC until she is strong enough to make the trip home.
· Ed Newell (Dean Newell's dad) is recovering from procedures to have stents inserted.
· Andy Johnson (son of Doris Sutherland, nephew of Alice Avery & Judi Beckwith) continues to be hospitalized for pneumonia and flu, and has had several mild heart attacks while there. He had a catheterization to ensure the stents that were recently inserted are working well
· Ginny Dorsey (Rhonda Dobberstein's mother) is recovering from back surgery and is having a rough time with the pain.
· Allie Wilson is doing well. Her blood pressure has stabilized and her pneumonia is healed.
· Cam (18 yar-old son of Tracy Marshall’s co-worker) who has mosaic trisomy 3, recently began having seizures, from which a brain tumor was then discovered. The oncology doctor thinks that the location is too risky to do a biopsy to see if it is malignant. Also, they still don't know what is causing the seizures, as the doctor does not believe the tumor is the issue.
· Griffin & Kaylynn Rooker upon the premature birth of their daughter, Ruby Rose, on 12/13. Kaylynn is recovering from a c-section and Ruby remains hospitalized.
· Patrick Low had a successful procedure to break large kidney stones into smaller pieces; continued prayers are appreciated as he deals with this ongoing issue.
· Linda Newell · is recovering from surgery for a herniated disc in her lower back.
· Judy Jones (wife of Pastor Grady Jones/friend of Pastor Jerry) is recovering from a successful surgery and doctors believe they removed all of the cancer. She is waiting for biopsy results to decide how to proceed with treatment.
· John Randell (friend of Bruce Ferguson) has been diagnosed with stomach cancer.
· Lennon McKamey (son of Kyle & Sarah) needs surgery on his shoulder. Please pray that preparing for surgery goes smoothly.
