John 16:5-15
The Work of the Spirit

Jesus mentioned the Holy Spirit earlier in John chapters 14 and 15. He referred to the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete. That word means someone “called alongside to help.” That is what the Holy Spirit does. He lives in and among believers to help them.
John chapter 16 gives the main job description of the Holy Spirit. It is a two-fold ministry.

1. Ministry to Unbelievers (16:5-11)

2. Ministry to Believers (16:12-15)

These words are addressed specifically to the Apostles. It is a promise to the Apostles that the Holy Spirit will guide them into the truth about Jesus. Their writings became our New Testament (cf. John 14:26, 2 Peter 1:21, 2 Timothy 3:16).

Live in the wonderful truths of God’s Word—especially in the truth that God loves you.
