Living With Excellence: Doing All Things Unto the Lord

Living With Excellence: Doing All Things Unto the Lord

Last week, in "Living Forward: The Overflow of a Thankful Heart," we reflected on how gratitude transforms our lives. A heart filled with thanksgiving overflows into love, service, and worship, becoming a powerful expression of our faith. We were reminded that thanksgiving is more than a moment—it's a daily posture that impacts every aspect of how we live and interact with others. This week, we continue the journey with "Living With Excellence: Doing All Things Unto the Lord." Building on the foundation of gratitude, we'll explore how thankfulness inspires a spirit of excellence in everything we do. Whether in our work, relationships, or service, giving our best honors God and reflects His glory. Together, we'll discover how to approach every task as an act of worship, striving to glorify Him in all we do.

Living With Excellence: Doing All Things Unto the Lord
hey

Coram Deo - living before the face of God in every moment.

Called to a Life of Excellence
We live in a world where mediocrity often feels acceptable, but as followers of Christ, we are called to something higher: a life of excellence. Excellence isn’t about perfection or human recognition; it’s about doing all things as an act of worship to God. The Reformers often emphasized the idea of Coram Deo—living before the face of God in every moment.
The question today is: Are you living your life as if God Himself is your audience?
John Calvin once said, “Whatever a man may be doing, he is to do it with the view of glorifying God.”
That’s our aim: to glorify God in everything, with a spirit of excellence. Let’s explore how Scripture and theological insights guide us in this pursuit.
Excellence Reflects God’s Glory
Excellence begins with understanding that everything we do—whether great or small—is an opportunity to glorify God. Our work, relationships, and even mundane tasks become acts of worship when done for His glory.
Theological Insight:
Jonathan Edwards taught that “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”
Living with excellence aligns our purpose with God’s ultimate goal for us—His glory.
Application: As you go about your daily responsibilities—whether at work, home, or church—ask yourself: Am I doing this to glorify God? Let His glory be your motivation.
Excellence Is an Act of Stewardship
God has entrusted each of us with time, talents, and opportunities. Excellence is a way of stewarding these gifts faithfully.
Theological Insight:
Martin Luther emphasized that our daily work, when done in faith, is as holy as any ministry. He said, “The maid who sweeps her kitchen is doing the will of God just as much as the monk who prays.”
Illustration: Consider Daniel, who excelled in his duties under pagan kings because he served not men, but God (Daniel 6:3). His diligence and integrity glorified God and set him apart.
Application: Are you faithful in the small things? Excellence begins with being diligent in the tasks before you today. Reflect on Luke 16:10: “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.”
Excellence Requires Diligence and Perseverance
Excellence isn’t easy—it demands effort and perseverance. In a world that often prioritizes shortcuts, the Christian commitment to diligence is a powerful witness.
Theological Insight:
Charles Spurgeon said, “By perseverance, the snail reached the ark.”
While excellence may not yield immediate results, it reflects trust in God’s timing and purposes.
Illustration: Olympic athletes train for years for a single event. Their discipline is a reminder that excellence requires focus and endurance, even when no one is watching.
Application: In what areas of your life are you tempted to cut corners? Commit to giving your best, trusting that God sees your faithfulness.
Excellence Brings Peace and Unity
A life of excellence fosters harmony because it reflects Christ’s character. When we give our best to God, it overflows into our relationships and creates peace.
Theological Insight:
Augustine wrote, “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.”
A life of excellence finds its anchor in the peace of Christ.
Illustration: Imagine a team where every member gives their best. Excellence doesn’t breed competition; it fosters cooperation and mutual respect.
Application: Are you promoting peace through your commitment to excellence? Let Christ’s peace rule your heart, guiding your efforts and interactions.
Excellence Testifies to the Gospel
When we live with excellence, we become witnesses of God’s transformative power. Our actions—no matter how ordinary—point others to Christ.
Theological Insight: John Piper said, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” A life of excellence fueled by joy in God draws others to Him.
Illustration: Think of Joseph in Egypt. His commitment to excellence, even in prison, ultimately led to God’s purposes being fulfilled (Genesis 39:22-23).
Application: How does your work or lifestyle reflect the gospel? Strive for excellence, knowing it can open doors for sharing Christ.
Conclusion: Living Unto the Lord
Excellence is not about seeking human approval or striving for perfection. It is a response to God’s grace, a reflection of His glory, and a testimony to the world.
Closing Challenge: This week, let’s recommit to doing everything as unto the Lord. Start each day with this prayer: “Lord, help me to glorify You in everything I do today, no matter how small.”
Live with a spirit of excellence, for His glory and the advancement of His Kingdom!

Online Giving

Tithe & Offering 2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, [so let him give]; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
God's people have always been characterized by giving, but the way they've given has changed over time.
Giving is an important aspect of the Christian life. After all, Luke records that Jesus himself said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).
At Northside, we want to encourage all members to pray about giving and give as God leads them.
