Scripture For Study

Romans 8:5-8
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

Paul contrasts living according to the flesh with living according to the Spirit, emphasizing the spiritual consequences of each.

Galatians 5:16-17
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.”

This verse directly addresses the conflict between the flesh and the Spirit, acknowledging the ongoing battle within believers.

Galatians 5:19-23
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

Paul contrasts the outcomes of living according to the flesh with the fruit of living by the Spirit.

Matthew 26:41
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Jesus acknowledges the weakness of the flesh, even when the spirit desires to do what is right.

John 3:6
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Jesus contrasts physical birth (flesh) with spiritual rebirth (Spirit), underscoring the transformative work of the Spirit in salvation.

1 Peter 2:11
“Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.”

Peter warns believers about the destructive nature of the flesh and its opposition to the soul’s health.

2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

This verse highlights the transformation that occurs through Christ, replacing the old, fleshly nature with a new spiritual identity.

Ephesians 2:3-5
“Among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.”

Paul reflects on the former life dominated by the flesh and the new life made possible through God’s mercy.

Colossians 3:5-10
“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. … Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”

Believers are called to actively put to death the desires of the flesh and embrace the renewed life in Christ.

1 Corinthians 9:27
“But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”

Paul speaks of disciplining the flesh to align with spiritual goals.
