Sermon Title: Do you pray like Jesus?
Text: Matthew 6:9-13

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Matt. 6:9-13

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.” Matt. 6:7

Point 1: Jesus only prayed to God the Father.

“Our Father in heaven…” Matt. 6:9a

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Tim 2:5

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12

The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous. Prov. 15:29

Point 2: Jesus was more concerned about God’s glory than his own needs.

“Hallowed be your name.” Matt. 6:9b

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Ex 20:7

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Pet. 1:14-16

Point 3: Jesus was very concerned about the kingdom of God.

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matt. 6:10

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” Rev. 11:5

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matt. 3:2

“Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” Luke 22:42

Point 4: Jesus prayed for practical and spiritual needs.

Give us this day our daily bread.” Matt. 6:11

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Matt. 6:12

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matt. 6:14-15

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Matt. 6:13

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Pet. 5:8

Application:

1. Ride in the peloton – go to church.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Heb. 10:24-25

2. Get dressed every morning – put on your spiritual armor.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. Eph. 6:10-11

3. Always know where the exit door is.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Cor. 10:13

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. James 1:13-15

Bonus:

For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever, Amen. Matt. 6:13b
