Achieving Success
1 Thess. 1:1-3
Pastor Jerry Koller
When this letter was written, the church at Thessalonica was a very young church—under four years old. Paul called them the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
· He mentions God the Father.
· He mentions the Lord, Jesus Christ.
· In this opening, he does not mention the third person in the Trinity, the Holy Spirit.
But he does four verses later. Don’t think Paul didn’t have a solid understanding of the Godhead.
Why may he have only mentioned the Father and the Son? Perhaps to emphasize how Jesus Himself is God.
Paul then extends a salutation. "Grace and peace to you."
· A salutation is a greeting at the beginning of a letter that typically is an expression of goodwill.
Following his salutation, Paul launches into the content of his letter by saying:
We = Paul, Silas, and Timothy
Paul never took credit for the workings of God. Rather, he points out how his team always gives thanks to God.
In the next verse, Paul expands a bit on what he just said.
3 Things Paul Remembers
#1. Work Produced by Faith
#2. Labor Prompted by Love
· The word “labor” is not to be understood so much as actions as it is effort.
· Effort is the energy, strength, and motivation that is needed to do something.
#3. Endurance Inspired by Hope
· Other translations use the word steadfast.
This Greek word that Paul used here in verse three is a combination of two root words.
· One word means under and the other means abiding or remaining steadfast.
· Sometimes this word is translated patient enduring.
· In the majority of instances where it is used, it is simply translated perseverance.
This perseverance is not just a stick to it concept. It is more like staying the course and bearing up under a load of trials and sufferings.
It perseveres because it is waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
APPLICATION
Does your life give living proof of works that are produced by faith in Jesus?
· Are you a new creation in Christ?
· Are old sinful ways passing away?
· Is the Holy Spirit changing your life to be more like Christ?
Does your life give living proof that all you do is prompted or motivated by the love you have for your Savior?
· Does it show you love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength?
· Does it show that you love others as Jesus loves you?
Does your life give living proof you persevere, you live out your faith because you know Jesus is coming back again?

Session 2 will begin on Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00-8:00pm upstairs. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jerry.

Hearing Assistance Devices Now Available

We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.

We Care | Meijer Simply Give

This is a campaign to purchase Meijer gift cards so that much needed food items can be bought to stock pantry shelves. Last campaign, We Care received over $28,000 in gift cards. Please spread the word so that they can, once again, get that generous amount. The food pantries are spending approximately $6000 a month to maintain their stock to meet the needs of those in our community. People don't need to go to Meijer to pick up the gift cards. They can (and are encouraged to) mail a check or take cash to either the First Congregational Church or We Care office. Please specify “Meijer Simply Give” with any donations. On September 14th, We Care will take the cumulative donations to Meijer so they can run a batch of cards; the funds are matched 2-to-1, up to $5000 in donations. Any donations contributed over $5,000 will go directly to the food pantries.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.

Pop Cans = Scholarships

Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
