Psalm 5:7-8
Pastor Jerry Koller
Psalm 5:7-8
Pastor Jerry Koller
David is able to come to God because of God’s great mercy.
· But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness, I will enter Your house. (NASB)
· But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. (ESV)
· But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. (ESV)
The Hebrew word translated mercy, lovingkindness and steadfast love is the word hesed.
Lovingkindness is an attribute God.
· It is directed toward His people.
· It is an attribute that is expressed in abundance.
· It is directed toward His people.
· It is an attribute that is expressed in abundance.
· It is expressed within relationships.
· There is a covenantal element attached to it.
· There is an element of grace associated with it.
· It also carries with it the characteristic of faithfulness.
· It is expressed in a loving and loyal manner.
· There is a covenantal element attached to it.
· There is an element of grace associated with it.
· It also carries with it the characteristic of faithfulness.
· It is expressed in a loving and loyal manner.
The phrase “your house” is a poetic reference to an intimate relationship, a reference to a deep, intimate fellowship with God.
David realizes that he can come into God’s house.
· He can have a relationship with God and worship Him because of God’s lovingkindness.
· He can have a relationship with God and worship Him because of God’s lovingkindness.
Jesus also taught this truth that no one can come to Him unless the Father draws him or her.
David asks God to lead him in righteousness.
Commenting on verse 8, Charles Spurgeon said: "Lead me, O Lord," as a little child is led by its father, as a blind man is guided by his friend. It is safe and pleasant walking when God leads the way.”
David asks to be led in God’s righteousness. Righteousness usually refers to moral and ethical thoughts and behavior.
He asks God to make straight your way before me. (v. 8)
· The term “straight ways” or “straight paths” is found in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
· It has to do with obedience.
· The term “straight ways” or “straight paths” is found in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
· It has to do with obedience.
APPLICATION
Walk the straight and narrow.
· Turning to the right or to the left distracts one from doing what God commands.
· Turning to the right or to the left distracts one from doing what God commands.
Ask God to lead you in the straight paths of righteousness.
Give thanks and praise to God for His lovingkindness.
· Thank Him for His grace that made this possible.
· Praise Him by worshipping him corporately, privately, and publicly.
· Thank Him for His grace that made this possible.
· Praise Him by worshipping him corporately, privately, and publicly.
Start your day in prayer, ask God to lead you in the paths of righteousness so that you do not swerve to the left or to the right.
Realize that as we are being led by God, the road may not always be smooth and trouble free. Therefore, keep in mind that it makes no difference how we are led, or where we are led, so long as we are sure God is leading us.

Last Chance! School Supplies Collection
We have been requested to do a school supplies collection for El Ayudante in Honduras for their upcoming school year [https://elayudanteinhonduras.com/]. Denise Hodge (daughter of Stan & Jean Robinson) who serves at this mission-based clinic asks that the backpacks be of good quality so they will last the entire school year. Other items needed are: spiral notebooks, dry erase markers, compasses, protractors, and packs of pens and pencils. Today is the last day ; please consider making a donation if you are able. Thank you!
Theology Class Resumes
Session 2 will begin on Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00-8:00pm upstairs. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jerry.
Flower Bed Maintenance Needed
Spring is finally here and we need help maintaining the church’s flowerbeds. If you're willing to adopt-a-flower bed for the summer, please contact the church office or feel free to stop by the church at your convenience and pull weeds from whatever flowerbed catches your eye. If you contact us in advance, we can arrange for the shed to be open so you can get tools; otherwise feel free to bring your own.
Hearing Assistance Devices Now Available
We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.
We Care News
· The Secretary of State mobile office is coming to South Haven on Friday, August 16th. Flier attached. They will be at Peace Lutheran Church, and anyone can schedule an appointment - they must call We Care (269-637-4342) to sign up. We have to have at least 10 people sign up, or they won't come.
· Meijer Simply Give - This is a campaign to stock our food pantries with Meijer gift cards so that they can purchase much needed food to stock their shelves. Last campaign, we received over $28,000 in gift cards. Please spread the word so that we can, once again, get that generous amount. The food pantries are spending approximately $6000 a month to maintain their stock to meet the needs of those in our community. People don't need to go to Meijer to pick up the gift cards. They can (and are encouraged to) mail a check or take cash to either First Congregational Church or the We Care office. Please specify Meijer Simply Give with any donations. Then, on August 17th and/or September 14th, we will take the cumulative donations to Meijer so they can run a batch of cards. On both those dates, the funds are matched 2-to-1, up to $5000 in donations. Any donations contributed over $5,000 will go directly to the food pantries.

Have You Considered?
Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
Pop Cans = Scholarships
Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
