We value leading out of your brokenness and weakness!
If you have been experiencing emotions and you have ignored them and responded one of these ways please lean in today: denial, minimizing, blaming, rationalizing, denial, staying distracted, deflecting, projecting.
1. God is an emotional being who feels as a person.
Jesus felt compassion; he was angry, indignant, and consumed with zeal; he was troubled, greatly distressed, very sorrowful, depressed, deeply moved, and grieved; he sighed; he wept and sobbed; he groaned; he was in agony; he was surprised and amazed; he rejoiced very greatly and was full of joy; he greatly desired, and he loved.”In many places the Bible demonstrates God’s intense compassion (Ex. 33:19; Deut. 13:17; Judg. 2:18; Pss. 103:13, 116:5), joy and delight (Deut. 30:9; Isa. 42:1; 62:4; Jer. 32:41), anger (Ex. 22:24; Deut. 6:14–15; Josh. 7:1; Jer. 7:20; Ezek. 5:13, Psalm 7:11, Rom. 1:18), grief (Gen. 6:6, Matt. 23:37-39, John 11:33-35, Eph. 4:30), and love (Deut. 7:7–8; Isa. 43:4; Jer. 31:3; Hos. 11:1; 1 John 4:8).
How do we experience God emotionally?
Why do I feel this way? What do these feelings reflect about my trust and faith in God?
2. Expressing our emotions can be a gateway to experiencing God.
Complete honesty, begin to ask the Lord to bring awareness to your emotions.
Who was more emotionally honest? How do you think the tax collectors emotional honesty about his sin and guilt helped his relationship with God?
Joseph wept repeatedly when he reunited with his family. Gen. 45:2 He wept so loudly the Egyptians heard him. He did not minimize or rationalize the painful years but out of the honest grieving of the pain, he truly forgave and was able to bless his brothers betrayed him.
What emotions could you express to God to grow closer to Him? What are you angry about today? Sad about? Afraid of? Pour out your response before God, trusting in Him as David did.
How might brokenness or weakness in your life today present an opportunity for God's power to be demonstrated?
How might brokenness or weakness in your life today present an opportunity for God's power to be demonstrated?
3. Emotional connection with God helps us value emotional connection with others.
If we are unaware of our feelings, our weaknesses and limits, and how the past impacts us, then we also lack the capacity and skill to enter deeply into the feelings and perspectives of others. We can't change what we are unaware of.
How can my emotional connection with God give me emotional room to connect with others?
