Worry is like a rocking chair. You go back and forth, over and over again, but you never really get anywhere.

Research has shown that 91% of things we worry about never happen, and for the remaining 9% of worries that do come true, the outcome is better than expected about a third of the time.
- LaFreniere, L. S., & Newman, M.G. (2019). “Exposing Worry’s Deceit: Percentage of untrue worries in generalized anxiety disorder treatment.” Behavior Therapy.

Researchers call this “worry’s deceit.” “Deceit is a good word to describe the nature of worry, implicitly demanding that we pay attention to it because the threat is real. In reality, it’s nearly always a false alarm.”

Worry tempts us to believe the worst is yet to come. But it’s lying to you! It’s a false alarm! Even the last 6% of things that do go wrong…It’s not 94%, it’s 100% when you know Jesus. Worry is always deceitful when you serve a loving, sovereign God.

You might say, “You don’t know my situation…” And truth is, I don’t. But what I do know is that most of Jesus’ listeners experienced a very tenuous/shaky existence, barely having enough to live on, and the prospect of even that being taken away at any moment. Maybe you can relate: maybe you live with the anxiety of being one accident or catastrophe away from your life collapsing. A sickness or injury. Getting laid off and not being able to find a job. Doctor’s bills piling up. Rent or property taxes rising. A car wreck leaving you without transportation. Part- or full-time support of a family member falling to you...These are the people Jesus is talking to about not worrying about the most basic needs, like food and clothing…

The world's view of keeping up with life:
"Get all you can. Can all you get. Sit on the lid and poison the rest!"
I think this was composed by the well known rock band
- Me First & The Gime Gimies

Key word or concept that controls the passage:
"fear".

1. What group is Jesus speaking to? What is the man who speaks to Jesus really looking for? Why does Jesus refuse his request?

2. Jesus uses the occasion to give a universal solemn warning: "Take care and be on guard against covetousness." What does this say about our default nature? What is greed/covetousness and what is its nature? vs. 15

3. The man in the parable vs.16-21 makes some wrong assumptions about the future based on his greed. What are they? What is God's reaction to his assumptions? There were riches available to him. What were they?

4. In vs. 22 Jesus is now speaking to whom? Instead of don't be greedy, now it's Don't Be Anxious. What is the same about greed and anxiety?

5. Jesus gives three lesser to greater parabolic statements to prove that worry is not worth it. What are they? vs. 24-28.

6. What's the bottom line of Jesus' teaching in the whole passage vs 13-34? Can you put it into a single sentence?
