Church Planting and Rooting for Gospel Purity
Church Planting and Rooting for Gospel Purity
1. What is the background?
- An elder in short, must be a man of character (v6)
- An Elder is an overseer (v7)
- The word for "steward" means a household manager, like a custodian
- A steward is only entrusted with the task of managing what is owned by someone else
- Jesus is the owner of the Church and more than that, Jesus created the church by His blood
- The primary duty of Elders/Pastors is to guard the church's sound doctrine and to defend against false doctrine
- The "trustworthy word as taught" is the whole pattern of sound doctrine as it was entrusted to Paul and taught by Paul in his apostolic authority

- The action in the passage is Titus is seeing planted churches become rooted churches
- Cretans all throughout these towns had believed the gospel, but they weren't organised into local churches under the stewardship of elders. That's what Titos has to do.
- The primary duty of these Elders/Pastors was to guard the right doctrine of the believers
- The clearest biblical reason to plant churches and to then ground them or root them is for the sake of gospel purity
- We are a truth-telling outpost, and we want to start more truth-telling outposts to raid against the deception in our communities
- The action in the passage is Titus is seeing planted churches become rooted churches

- The local church is the counter-cultural band of human citizens who understand their ultimate citizenship is in heaven
- Practically: We need the church for hope beyond ourselves
- The local church is a community that walks to the beat of a different drum. We operate on the basis of only what God has said
- The Church, filled by the Holy Spirit, is the people who are tapped into true hope and this hope leads to endurance in a fallen and broken world
- The surrounding action, the air of the passage, is that the local church is essential for Christian endurance.
