Introduction
Context:
Job endured unspeakable suffering and loss, crying out to God and enduring accusations from his friends. Finally, God spoke, but did not address Job's suffering directly.
Key Questions:
Is God insensitive to human suffering? Does God dismiss our pain by shifting the focus to His sovereignty and power?
Main Point: Job had a personal encounter with God. He heard God's voice and realized that God's presence is enough.
1: Job’s Background
A. Summary of Job's Story:
- Righteous Man: Job was wealthy and righteous.
- Loss and Suffering: Lost all wealth and loved ones due to a test, ended up in painful sores.
- Friends' Accusations: Friends doubted and accused him.
- Integrity and Confrontation: Maintained integrity initially, then confronted God about injustice.
- Despair: Fell into deep despair, accusing God of injustice.
B. Important Points to Remember:
Historical Context:
- One of the oldest books in the Bible.
- Job was an early human father, predating Moses.
- Lacked Hebrew, Jewish, or Israelite identity, no commandments, Holy Spirit, or Bible.
2: God Finally Speaks
A. God Speaks from a Storm:
- Scripture Reading: Job 38:1-3
- God speaks out of a violent storm.
- Often speaks when unexpected (e.g., shower, walk, music).
B. Confirmation of Job's Lack of Knowledge:
- Job 38:2: God addresses Job’s words without knowledge.
- Context: Job had no theological guidance, Holy Spirit, or scriptures.
C. Is God Callous to Pain and Suffering?
- Scripture Reading: Job 38:4-11
- God talks about creation, not Job’s suffering.
- Emphasis on God's sovereignty and power.
3: To Hear God Speak is to Know His Presence
A. Encountering God’s Presence:
- Principle: Hearing God is encountering His presence.
- Ways God Speaks: Through storms, whispers, people, prayer, worship, scripture, sermons, and friends.
- Comforting Presence: God’s presence is more important than His words alone.
B. Verses on God's Presence:
- Deuteronomy 31:6: God will never abandon you.
- Matthew 28:20: God is with you always.
C. From Knowing "About God" to Knowing God:
- Job’s Realization:
- Scripture Reading: Job 42:1-6
- Job acknowledges his lack of knowledge and repents.
- Personal Encounter: Move from hearing “about God” to a personal encounter “with God.”
- Example: Apostle Paul, disciples on the road to Emmaus, and Job.
Conclusion
- Encouragement: Listen for God's voice in your life. His presence signifies His love and desire for a relationship with you.
- Application: Reflect on how you can open your heart to encounter God in your daily life, just as Job did.
Reflection Questions:
1. How can you relate Job’s experience of suffering to your own life?
2. In what unexpected ways have you encountered God’s presence?
3. How does knowing God’s presence is with you provide comfort in your daily life?
Use this guide to follow along as we explore Job’s journey and God's revelation to him. Reflect on how God's presence can transform your understanding of suffering and His love for you.
