What did the Prodigal Son do?
- He traded his family & future for a the right now
- He wanted right now gratification over delayed gratification

What did the Prodigal Son give up?
- His family, father, and future

For what was all this given up for?
vs. 13 “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living.”

Consequence?
vs. 14 “About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. 15 He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. 16 The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.”

Sin left him: Broke, Starving, with the Pigs, Alone

“Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.”

- “Don't be misled- you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.” Galatians 6:7
- For the wages of sin is death - Romans 6:23
Meaning this - live in sin - get paid in destruction.

What was God’s response?
But where is God in all this?

vs. 20, “And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”

He's not mad - he's filled with Love
He's not condescending- he's compassionate
He's not distant- he comes running
He doesn't hit him - he hugs & kisses him!

He does the very opposite of everything the devil tries to tell you he'd do!

The Father cleans him up, gives him a new outfit, and throws the biggest party imaginable

Unseen consequence
vs. 31 “His father said to him, ‘Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours.”

He got his relationship with his father back. He was welcomed back to the family. But he still paid the price for what he willfully gave up.

Sin has lasting consequences.
