Supplement Your Faith - The word he uses for supplement is epichorēgein. This eludes to a willingness to sacrifice out of passion for something greater. This very word (epichorēgein) is an encouragement never to be content with mediocrity.


Faith causes us to stand and remain resolute in the face of adversity. True faith in God does not lead to retreat and isolation but to a life effective in the service of God and other people. It also produces the courage to always show whose life it is and whom it serves.


We must supplement our faith with a quality value system. If we want to lead exceptional relationships, families, ministries, or businesses, these values are necessary to thrive in life.

The “skin” we put in the game is not for the purpose of receiving the promises of God but rather for the purpose of responding to the promises we have already received.

QUESTION:
In your own words describe ones behavior when they are responding out of appreciation versus one who may be responding out of obligation against their will.

MORAL EXCELLENCE

2 Peter 1:5 (NLT) "In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence…"

To faith must be added what the Revised Standard Version calls virtue and we have called courage.

The word is aretē; it is very rare in the New Testament, but it is the supreme Greek word for virtue in every sense of the term. It means excellence. It’s the prerequisite to forming good habits and where sinful desires/impulses are dissipated.

There are two ways in which it may be understood.

(a) Aretē is what we might call operative or efficient excellence. Aretē is that value that makes someone a good citizen and friend; it is that virtue that makes someone an expert in living a good life.

(b) Aretē often means courage. The Greek historian and philosopher Plutarch says God is a hope of aretē, not an excuse for cowardice.

QUESTION:

Why is courage (moral excellence) the first value we are encouraged to supplement our faith with?
