We all know what waiting feels like. We wait in traffic, in doctors' offices, and restaurants. Yet, when we pause and think about it, the concept of waiting on God sounds odd. That is why we are wrapping this series with one more Holy Half-Truth that many Christians say; "I'm just waiting on God".
The Old and New Testaments are filled with passages about people waiting on God. But as we often do, some of these passages have been taken out of context. Read Exodus 14:14-15. What does it mean to "be still"? How does it differ from being apathetic and doing nothing?
Pastor Jonathan said, "Our faith journey will bring mysterious times of waiting". Read Isaiah 64:1-4. While Israel's rescue from the Assyrians was around 600-700 years before Christ, their angst in the waiting and patience are similar to struggles we see in our own world in 2024. What similarities between our 2 cultures stick out to you as you read the words of the Israelites in this passage?
So what might God be doing during these times of waiting? Pastor Jonathan gave us 3 possible reasons for what God may be doing in our waiting. Do you have any personal experiences with any of these outcomes?
- Protecting us: from what we don't know or can't see
- Preparing us: shaping our character
- We don't know: whatever it is, our good, HIS glory
"Do what you can do while you wait for God to do what only He can do". According to Pastor Jonathan, we can do this by: doing the next right thing, and being faithful with what's in front of us. Here is a personal question, what does this look like in your current circumstances?
Take some time and go to our Heavenly Father in prayer. Ask Him to help you in the waiting.
