Description: Stephen's final words to the Jewish leadership in Jerusalem were a scathing indictment. They were so stuck in the past that they were resisting and even opposing God Himself! Because they had an unhealthy obsession or relationship with the past, they couldn't embrace Jesus. Our past is often a source of problems. There are many ways our relationship with past hurts, sins, or experiences can impact and warp our present. One danger Stephen's message can serve to warn us of is the danger of turning back to old ways. As apprentices, we're called to a life of moving forward with Jesus, our Master, taking the lead. No turning back. Because Christ Himself never turned back from His mission to save us.
A DISCIPLE of Jesus is an APPRENTICE of Jesus
Being a Disciple = Becoming LIKE Jesus by being WITH Jesus, and DOING what Jesus DID.
The Sanhedrin had a warped view of:
• MOSES
• THE TEMPLE
• MOSES
• THE TEMPLE
A PROBLEM WITH THE PAST: IN THEIR HEARTS THEY TURNED BACK
1. We are tempted to turn back to our old comforts
2. We are tempted to turn back to our old identity
UNLESS YOU ARE CONSTANTLY BEING RENEWED TO BE LIKE YOUR MASTER YOU WILL NATURALLY ACT LIKE YOUR OLD SELF
3. We are tempted to turn back to old memorials

The past is never as good as we thought it was
Jesus is always better than we imagine him to be
Our future in Jesus is more glorious than we could hope it would be

He plowed a straight line of perfection directly to Jerusalem. He headed
right to the cross to pay for all our one-handed, backward-looking, bad
plowing. He even paid for the radically, fully devoted plowing we think
