(NIV Application Commentary) he apocalyptic chapters of Daniel continue the theme we discovered in the first six chapters. The stories of the first half of the book illustrated how, in spite of present appearances, God is in control and will overcome the seemingly invulnerable evil forces of the day.

The four beasts represent four kingdoms that set themselves up as agents of chaos. They are grotesque.
The message is that one power system will come after another and cause damage.
The message is that one power system will come after another and cause damage.
Daniel was meant to understand that we don't live in an amoral universe, that there are forces actively out to destroy God's good order.
The kingdoms will be judged... It seems as though God has come to earth to enact the judgement.
There is no great battle. Power is simply taken away from the evil kingdoms.
We don't need to fear

This is the first time the language of "one like a son of man" is used in the bible. Revelation uses it two more times (1:13 and 14:14).
Stephen sees the "son of man standing at the right hand of God" in Acts 7:56
Jesus refers to himself as the "son of man" 78 times across the four gospels.
Daniel talks about the "son of man" coming to the courtroom (from heaven to earth) and being led into God's presence.

This son of man's kingdom will not be temporary like that of the four beasts...
Jesus' core message was that the kingdom of God had drawn near.
Daniel promises that all the powers in the world will one day come under Christ.

We live in a time of tension between two Kingdoms.
“There is no neutral ground in the universe. Every square inch, every split second is claimed by God, and counterclaimed by Satan.”
― C. S. Lewis
Daniel 7 calls to remain faithful and trust God in the face of antichrist powers.
Daniel 9 tells people to hang on for 490 years in order for six things to happen:

God promises that six things will happen in 490 years:
- Israel will stop Transgressing
- Sin will be defeated
- Wickedness will be atoned for
- Everlasting righteousness will be "brought in"
- Vision and prophecy will be "sealed" which means either fulfilled or finished
- The most Holy place will be anointed.
Israel had been promised that their exile would only last 70 years, but Daniel is saying that what Israel longs for will actually come 490 years later, around the time of Jesus.
The temple in Jerusalem was rebuilt around 516 BC. Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem's walls in 444 BC.
Most scholars date Jesus' birth to between 6 and 4 BC which is 510 years after the temple was rebuilt and 440 years after the walls were rebuilt.

By the first century people were hoping the Messiah would bring a political victory, they didn't understand that his true work was named in Daniel.
Jesus:
- Was the true Israelite who fulfilled Israel's vocation as God's representative
- Defeated sin
- Atoned for Sin
- Brought in everlasting righteousness
- Fulfilled the vision and prophecies of the Old Testament
- Took on himself the role of the Temple and then commissioned his followers as the temple of the Holy Spirit

Daniel makes clear that there will be a battle, but that ultimately the battle is won.
