Week 3
“Shall We Dance”

God is inviting us to participate in this dance. It’s a dance designed to bring us life, freedom, relationship, joy, and healing.

A. Our Emotions link our Internal and External Worlds.

B. Our Emotions Connect Us to God and Others.

C. Our Emotions Open the Door to Hard Questions.
 Is there a purpose to my pain?
 If God loves me, why doesn’t He do something?
 If God is just, why is this happening to me?

God gave you emotions. God is an emotional God.

Am I moving toward God or am I moving away from God?

Jesus doesn’t deny the emotions He’s feeling in the moment.

In the same way, we must be willing to dance with our soul (emotions) which wants one thing and our Spirit, which desires what God wants.

We must learn to do what Jesus did by bringing our whole being, including our thoughts, emotions and will to the Father’s so that He can speak to us.

David danced well with both his soul and spirit man before God.

SOUL MAN…Psalm 13:1-3, David cries out, “O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand? Turn and answer me, O Lord my God! Restore the sparkle to my eyes or I will die.

SPIRIT MAN…Psalm 13:5-6, “But I will trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.”

SOUL MAN…Psalm 6:3, 6-7, “I am sick at heart. How long, O Lord, until you restore me? I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears. My vision is blurred by grief; my eyes are worn out because of all my enemies.”

SPIRIT MAN…Psalm 6:9, “The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will answer my prayer.”

SOUL MAN…Psalm 73:12-14, “Look at these wicked people-enjoying a life of ease while their riches multiply. Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I keep myself innocent for no reason? I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain."

SPIRIT MAN…Psalm 73:21-28 “Then I realized that my heart was bitter…Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand…You guide me with your counsel…I desire you more than anything on earth…God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever…I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.”

SOUL MAN…Matt. 26:38, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me.”

SPIRIT MAN…Matt. 26:39 “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

We must be willing to engage in the Dance between our Soul and Spirit when it comes to the emotions that reside within us.
