Chapter 4:
Jesus and disciples head to the land of the Gerasenes
Jesus calms the wind and waves

Chapter 5:
Jesus heals the Gerasene demoniac
Jesus and disciples head back to Capernaum
Jesus heals the bleeding woman
Jesus raises Jairus’ daughter from the dead

v.1 – “He went away from there and came to His hometown, and His disciples followed him.”

Mk. 1:9, 1:24

John 1:46 – “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”

v.2 – “And on the Sabbath He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands?”

“Astonished,” Gk. ἐκπλήσσω (ekplēssō), “to be perplexed”

Mark 1:21-22 – “And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.”

v.3 – “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.”

“Carpenter,” Gk. is τέκτων (tektōn), “Artisan (including wood, stone, metal)”

Jude 1 – “Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James”

“Offense,” Gk. σκανδαλίζω (skandalizō), “Scandal”

1 Cor. 1:27-29

v.4 – “And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.’”

Truth: “Familiarity breeds contempt.”

vs.5-6 – “And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.”

Psalm 115:3 – “Our God is in heaven, He does whatever He wants.”
Job 42:2 – “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”
Daniel 4:35 – “All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?’”

Truth: Truth: "Faith comes from believing the message of the Gospel, not beholding the miracles of God.

Romans 10:17 – “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

v.6 – “And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.”
