The Text in Context

"Jesus has not yet told this man anything new. He simply asks the man how he reads the law, and the man reads the law exactly as Jesus does. Then Jesus says, 'All right, you know what the law says; do it.' This is where it gets uncomfortable for us too, isn’t it? The law commands us to do what we cannot and persistently do not do. If you want to be saved by your works, by law keeping, then you must be saved by keeping the whole law; not most of the time, but all of the time; not in most of its commands, but in all of its commands. Sermon Outline:

1. Parables

2. Eternal Life

3. Jesus

4. "Who is My Neighbor?"

5. Go and Do Likewise.

1. Make a list of who your neighbors are, according to Jesus.

2. Reflect on Jesus' story.

3. Go and do likewise with the people on your list.

1. What questions do you have about "eternal life?"

2. What does the Bible actually say about eternal life?

3. Are you surprised that Jesus connects the Good Samaritan with eternal life? Why or why not?

4. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, what does Jesus convey about compassion and kindness towards others, regardless of their background or beliefs?

5. Reflecting on the actions of the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan, what does this parable teach us about the nature of genuine faith and righteousness?

6. What's the significance of the Samaritan as the hero of the parable in the context of Jesus' audience and the societal norms of the time? If Jesus was teaching this parable today, whom might he place in the role of the Samaritan?

7. How does the parable compel us to reflect on our responsibilities towards those in need, both locally and globally?

8. What does it mean for you, today, to "Go and do likewise?"
