Cross City Church
April 7, 2024 | Humility
The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. This is taught to children for good reason, but it is for all of us. In fact, most cannot easily do this! But Jesus said this in so many different ways. It’s part of the great Commandment! “…Love your neighbor as yourself.” Envision a church who models humility. Envision a friend who models humility. Envision a marriage partner who embodies humility.

Philippians 2:1-4
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

Revelation 3:7-8
“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says this: ‘I know your deeds. Behold, I have put before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not denied My name.’”

2 Corinthians 12:20
For I am afraid that perhaps when I come I may find you to be not what I wish and may be found by you to be not what you wish; that perhaps there will be strife, jealousy, angry tempers, disputes, slanders, gossip, arrogance, disturbances…

Humility is gentle strength, as best demonstrated in the life of Christ.

He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

Ephesians 2:4-5
But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)…

If we remember what God has done for us, we will have a deep sense of gratitude which motivates us to represent Him well.
What is the goal we’re aiming for?
Philippians 2:2
…make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

How do we live this out?
1. Wean yourself from yourself.
