John 10:1-5 (MSG)
"Let me set this before you as plainly as I can. If a person climbs over or through the fence of a sheep pen instead of going through the gate, you know he's up to no good—a sheep rustler! 2 The shepherd walks right up to the gate. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate to him and the sheep recognize his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he gets them all out, he leads them and they follow because they are familiar with his voice. 5 They won't follow a stranger's voice but will scatter because they aren't used to the sound of it."

1. In the Middle East:

a. shepherds named to their sheep

b. they recognized their own name
c. mingled flocks would separate when their name was called

2. Out of that flock, the father of the family would choose a “ pet lamb “.

a . this lamb was to be offered to God during the Passover Feast

b.it would be thoroughly inspected for four days prior to the Passover

c.that lamb that would represent their family

3.This symbolizes Jesus, who became the sacrificial lamb on our behalf.

Isaiah 53:7-8 (MSG)
He was beaten, he was tortured, but he didn't say a word. Like a lamb taken to be slaughtered and like a sheep being sheared, he took it all in silence. 8 Justice miscarried, and he was led off— and did anyone really know what was happening? He died without a thought for his own welfare, beaten bloody for the sins of my people.

4.700 years later, John the Baptist introduced Jesus as “ the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.“

5.On the day of the sacrifice, the lamb is killed, then the inside organs are removed.

a.a small piece of wood is placed inside the lamb to hold its rib cage open

b.then the lamb is stretched across a long stick

c.then its bottom legs are stretched and tied to the bottom of the stick and its upper legs are stretched and attached to the top of the stick

6.This is the way that it has been done since the time of Exodus, several thousand years ago.

7.When you look at it from a top view, it look like a lamb crucified on two sticks

8.When Jewish families arrived for Passover, they would bring with them or buy a bronze name tag.

a.this was used to inscribe the family name on it

b.then they tied it around the neck of the “ pet lamb “

9.Each father wanted God to know that his family was observing the Passover.

a.the father wanted to ensure that the lamb that bore his families name was being sacrificed

10.Now, how was this fulfilled in Jesus and how does it apply to you ?

John 19:19
And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

11. Remember that Jesus is the “ pet lamb “ especially chosen by our Heavenly Father.

12.Pilate is writing an inscription and placing it on the cross.

John 19:20
This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

13.It is written in three different languages, Hebrew, Greek and Latin.

14.Here we see God the Father was placing His name on His “ pet lamb “.

15.In order to get understanding, we need to look at some Jewish literary customs.

16.The Jewish scribes in those days would take the first letters of the words in a phrase and put them together to see if there was a hidden meaning in the arrangement of theses letters.

a.this custom goes all the way back to the Babylonian captivity

Example :
How many of you have ever seen a cross with I N R I written on it ?

1.When you take JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS in Latin, you come up with I N R I.

2Jesus, in Latin is not spelled with a J, it is spelled with an I

3.The 2nd letter N is the first letter of the word Nazareth in Latin

4. The R is for the letter Rex, which is Latin for the word King

5. The letter J in the word Jews

17. This forms the acrostic I N R I.

18.An acrostic is a poem or puzzle in which certain letters form a word or words.

19.So the Romans would read it in Latin, their native tongue.

a. the Jews would read it in Hebrew

b.all others would read it in Greek, the common tongue of that day

20.To the Jews, it was a totally different message.

a.know that the Hebrews read from right to left, not like we do

21.To the Jews, it would read in Hebrew :

YeshuaHanatzri Vemelech Hayhoodem

22.This forms the acrostic Y H V H.

a.this is called the “ tetragrammaton “ which is a Greek term of these four letters

b.the tetragrammaton is the holy, unspeakable name of God

c.this occurs more than 6000 times in the original Hebrew text of the Old Testament scriptures.......God validating Himself in His Word

d.we pronounce this as YAHWEH or JEHOVAH

John 19:21
Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

23.This made the Jews very angry. How can you tell ?

24.Because they tried to tell Pilate what to and what not to write.

a.no one was in a position to tell Pilate what to do unless you were Caesar himself

John 19:22
Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

25.By placing this inscription where he did, Pilate was God’s pen that wrote the holy name of God above God’s lamb

26.So what made the chief priests and the Jews so mad that they would dare talk to Pilate in that type of manner ?

27.When the priests and the Jews read the sign in their Hebrew tongue

a.the first letters of JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS

b.it formed the hidden message Y H V H, meaning God

c.God had this nailed to the cross to show that His Son Jesus was the Fathers chosen “ pet lamb “

28.The Jews had been bringing lambs for the Passover to the Temple with their bronze name tags and were saying...

God, see our name? This lamb is for our family.

a.and out of heaven, God the Father took His pet lamb to the Temple priests to say to mankind, “ See, this is My Lamb for My family “

Ephes. 3:14-19
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, [15] Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, [16] That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; [17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, [18] May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; [19] And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

29.It clearly tells shows us “ Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named “.

30. We are God’s family.

31. But how does this apply to you ?

Rev. 2:17
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

32.Overcomers will get a stone with a new name written.

a. these were known as victory stones

33.Judges had white and black stones.

a.if a black one was given to a criminal, it showed that they were condemned.

b.if a white stone was given it showed that they were pardoned

c.conquerors in the public games were also given white stones with their names in them

d.which entitled them to be supported the rest of their lives at public expense

Rev. 3:12
Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

34.So when we get to heaven, we will all get new tattoos with :

a. the name of God

b. New Jerusalem

c. Jesus’ new name

Rev. 22:4
And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

35.Just like Jesus was identified as God the Fathers pet lamb while He was here on earth, we will be identified as His pet lambs when we are in heaven.
