Hope is Alive
Hope is an anchor and it comes from Him.
H= Hope comes from relationship with Him
If you want to have hope… You need to KNOW Him.
The deeper your knowledge of Him the stronger/more accessible your hope will be.
I’m not talking about knowing about Him. Lots of people know things about God.
I’m talking about knowing Him through relationship.
When He speaks to You through His Word and You walk with Him and communicate with Him as a friend.
David wrote…
Psalms 61:3 (NKJV) For You have been a shelter (hope) for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
Psalms 61:1-3 (NKJV) Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For You have been a shelter(hope) for me, A strong tower from the enemy.
Our emotions can be a roller coaster… often unpredictable.
Hope is an anchor to the soul.
Hebrews 6:17-20 (ESV) 17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
We who have fled for refuge
This is familiar to me.
The word used in the Bible as trust is defined as to run to for refuge
to hie (run to) for refuge (but not so precipitately as 2620); figuratively, to trust, be confident or sure: — be bold (confident, secure, sure)
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.
Psalms 21:7 (NKJV) 7 For the king trusts in the LORD,
And through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved (shaken) (to slip, shake, fall: — be carried, cast, be out of course).
Psalms 62:8 (NKJV) 8 Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
Psalms 84:12 (NKJV) 12 O LORD of hosts,
Blessed is the man who trusts in You!
Psalms 91:1-2 (NKJV) 1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Proverbs 28:1 The wicked run away when no one pursues but the godly are bold as a lion.
Bold = to run to for refuge, to trust, be confident or sure, be bold (confident, secure, sure)
O= Hope comes from Offering ourselves in surrender to God.
I heard a preacher say “Hope is not the product of determination, it is the product of surrender”.
The more truly surrendered to Him we are the more we can live in hope and peace.
That’s why learning to run to Him for refuge brings us Hope.
As we learn to rely on Him and surrender to His way… we are more settled and more hopeful.
We become more at peace… more settled… not resigned… settled.
Faith is not a hazy… wispy whimsical idea it’s built on the Rock of God’s Word.When my faith is solid bc of the Word of God my hope is solid.
I learn that through surrender to His way.
Faith and Hope are connected.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance (setting under, thing put under, substructure, foundation) of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.
Our Faith is a Foundation.
1 Peter 5:10 (NKJV) 10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
Settle = to lay a basis for, to lay a foundation
Faith is what gives foundation to our hope.
Romans 5:1-5 NKJV Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character (experience, proof); and character (experience, proof), hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us..
P= Hope is patient
Hope that is seen is not Hope
Romans 8:24-25 KJV For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
Patience = cheerful or hopeful endurance
E= Hope is Eternal
It’s rooted in more than this moment.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV And now abide (to stay in a given place, dwell, endure) faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
The word “forerunner” is yet another of the nautical terms used in Hebrews. The particular word here, prodromos, is one that appears nowhere else in Scripture, but has to do with a familiar scene in the ancient world. Louis Talbot (President of Biola Theological Seminary) explains:
The Greek harbors were often cut off from the sea by sandbars, over which the larger ships dared not pass till the full tide came in. Therefore, a lighter vessel, a prodromos or “forerunner” took the anchor and dropped it in the harbor. From that moment the ship was safe from the storm, although it had to wait for the tide before it could enter the harbor…The entrance of the small vessel into the harbor, the forerunner carrying the ship’s anchor, was the pledge that the ship would safely enter the harbor when the tide was full. And because Christ, our “forerunner,” has entered heaven itself, having torn asunder everything that separates the redeemed sinner from the very presence of God, He Himself is the Pledge that we, too, shall one day enter the harbor of our souls and the very presence of God in the New Jerusalem.
Jesus went before us…
Our Hope is SET in Heaven… All we have to do is walk with Him who is our HOPE.
If you’re not connected to JESUS though you can’t walk in Hope.
He is the REASON for our hope.
1 Peter 3:15 (ESV) 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,...
I want us to invite the Holy Spirit to speak to us today.
Holy Spirit will You show us where we need to apply this message today?
If you need to grow in your faith and hope… Make a decision to spend time with Him in the Bible.
Romans 10:17 (NKJV) 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Ask Him to help you to grow in your trust by learning to run to Him in every situation.
A wise man/woman/leader/Father/Mother/Boss TRUSTS in the LORD
Psalms 21:7 (NKJV) 7 For the king trusts in the LORD,
And through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved (shaken) (to slip, shake, fall: — be carried, cast, be out of course).
Is your Hope Patient?
GOD teaches us patience through waiting…
It’s hard… we don’t like it… but we grow.
Wait = To bind together perhaps by twisting.
I challenge you to determine to SURRENDER.
Surrender requires TRUST.
Learn to trust Him by running to Him and choose surrender to His Way.
