A Heart that forgives is a heart that:

1. Keeps no record of wrongs.
2. Keeps in mind that it has been forgiven.
3. Keeps striving to love like Jesus.

(Luke 23:32-34a NLT) Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. 33 When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.

34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”

Forgiveness is not:

1. Forgetting.
2. Getting over it.
3. Acting like it never happened.

Forgiveness is:

1. An act of Christ-like love.

(Proverbs 10:12 ESV) Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.

(John 15:12-13 NLT) “This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

2. An act of obedience.

(Matthew 5:43-45a NLT) “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven.”

(Mark 11:25 NLT) “But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.”

3. An act of freedom.

(Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT) Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

(Galatians 5:1 NIV) It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
