PGI - February 11, 2024 Sunday Service

In our church we aim to make it feel like a home, where strangers feel they are part of the family, where smiles are overflowing and hugs are natural, because we believe that life is a journey, and that we are simply channel of blessings. In our church we value three things, gratitude because it's the proper response to God, excellence because God expects nothing less, and grace because we all need it.

Daily Bread

Matthew 6:9-11 (ESV) 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread…

Luke 11:2-4 (ESV) “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name.Your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread…

Matthew 6:31-34 (ESV) 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Proverbs 30:8-9 (ESV) 8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, 9 lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.

The Text in Context
Following on the heels of Matthew’s instructions about keeping the law, this passage indicates right ways of enacting religious practices of giving, prayer, and fasting. In each case, believers ought to act “in secret” to receive divine rather than human approval. Their behavior is to contrast with “hypocrites” who care about present, public honor. The problem of hypocrisy will also be addressed by Jesus in chapters 15 and 23. The centerpiece of this passage (and possibly the whole Sermon on the Mount) is the Lord’s Prayer (6:9–13). The importance of prayer will also be emphasized in 7:7–11, with the theme of forgiveness (6:12, 14–15) reiterated in the parable of the unforgiving servant in Matthew’s fourth discourse (18:23–35).

Interpretative Insight
The adjective translated “daily” is epiousios, a word that occurs nowhere else in extant writings prior to the New Testament (and only here and in Luke 11:3). Although a word’s etymology does not always lead to correct conclusions about its meaning, in this case it is the only option for approximating the meaning of epiousios. Three options from etymology have been suggested: (1) bread for physical (or spiritual) existence (epi + ousia); (2) bread for the present (day) (epi tēn ousan [hēmeran]); (3) bread for the coming day, either the literal or the eschatological coming day (from epeimi, “to come upon, arrive”).2 Given that the last three petitions are for more immediate concerns prior to the kingdom’s arrival, one of the first two options is most likely.

Guide Questions
1. In both the gospels of Matthew and Luke, the petition for food comes after the acknowledgement of God as a loving Father in heaven, why do you think this is the case? How does this model reflect your prayer?
2. In both prayers, the kingdom and will of God takes precedence over our shopping list. What do you think are the implications of this?3. Matthew’s prayer slightly differs with Luke on the petition for bread. What’s your take on it? And what could be the implication of asking for bread only for today and bread for tomorrow?
4. If bread symbolizes our need to live, do you have an impression that the bread we are asking for is way more than the physical? Recall in the Bible where we find the imagery of bread/food and how it relates to Jesus.
5. In the land of plenty, maybe our most important need is spiritual rather than physical. What would our prayer look like as we trust God to provide us spiritual today’s bread today and tomorrow’s bread?

Prayer

Our Father, we acknowledge our spiritual bankruptcy, we need your provision to satisfy our souls in our need for guidance, fellowship and love. We confess that we neglect our spirituality just because we think we have plenty physically. And during the time of trials we realize we need you badly. We come on our knees and we humbly ask for the bread that satisfies our innermost spiritual hunger. Bring us close to Jesus, Amen.
