Judges 21:25
In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.
1 Samuel 3:1b
...In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.
TURNAROUNDS OFTEN START AT POINTS OF PAIN...

1 Samuel 1:1a,2
1 There was a certain man [Elkanah] … 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

1 Samuel 1:6-8
6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.

8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”
PAIN CAN LEAD TO BREAKTHROUGH PRAYING...

1 Samuel 1:10,12-14
10 In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly…12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

1 Samuel 1:20
20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”
COULD I EVER PRAY THAT WAY?

Romans 8:26-27
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
Five myths about people who pray...

* You need to be emotional;
* You need to have a large religious vocabulary;
* You need to be a morning person;
* You need to always feel like praying;
* You need to be something other than completely normal.
Where can I start?

* Translate your yearnings into hunger for God;
* Focus on the provisions of Christ’s shed blood;
* Invite the help of the Holy Spirit to pray through you;
* Dedicate the fruit of your prayers to the glory of God.
1 Samuel 1:27-28
27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he worshipped the Lord there.
Hannah’s Hymn, Mary’s Prayer, and the Triumph of JESUS

1 Samuel 2:1a,4,8a,10b
1 Then Hannah prayed and said:“My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high.

4 “The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength.

8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.

10 …“He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
