NOTES | Seek His Presence More than His Promises
John 5:1-9
After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, waiting for the moving of the waters; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted. A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus *said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.
We are all sick.

We are all “sick” spiritually because we were all born with a sinful heart.
Our spiritual sickness manifest in different ways in different people: shame, insecurities, fear, anxiety, jealousy, unforgiveness, addictions, etc.
We are all seeking/searching.

These multitudes of sick people were waiting/seeking for a once in a lifetime chance to be the first to get into the pool and receive their miracle to be healed.

Because of our spiritual “sickness,” we are all seeking for that healing that will take away our shame, insecurities, fear, anxiety, addictions, etc.

One man has been sick, waiting, and disappointed for 38 years because someone else always gets into the pool before him.
The man didn’t recognize that he was in the presence of the Son of God because he was so focused on the pool (blessing) rather than on Jesus (Blesser).
When we are running after God’s promises (blessings) rather than focusing on God the Blesser, we will often be disappointed.
We are all salvable.

No sickness is too difficult for Jesus to heal. The man was healed instantly.
Our original sickness of a sinful heart can be healed instantly by God if we come in faith to Him. We can begin a new journey of freedom and healing in our lives with a personal relationship with Jesus.

Let us seek after His presence more than His promises or blessings, because if we find the Blesser then we will also receive the true blessings/promises that He wants us to have.
