John 14:16-26
Main Idea: Christians Worship One God, Eternally Existent in Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
“We believe in one God, Creator of all things, holy, infinitely perfect, & eternally existing in a loving unity of three equally divine Persons: the Father, the Son & the Holy Spirit. Having limitless knowledge & sovereign power, God has graciously purposed from eternity to redeem a people for Himself & to make all things new for His own glory.” Salem Church Statement of Faith (Article 1)
“‘And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them. The Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, ‘But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?’ Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.’”John 14:16-26
I. Who is the Holy Spirit?“…another Helper…Spirit of truth…He…the Advocate…the Holy Spirit…”
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all.” John 6:63
II. What Does the Holy Spirit Do?“…to help you…be with you forever…lives with you…will be in you…teach you all things…remind you of everything I have said…”
a. He Teaches and Reminds –“He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” Vs. 26
“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God has they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”2 Peter 1:21
“If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”Romans 8:11
b. He Shows God’s Love – “And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” Vs. 21
“God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”Romans 5:5
c. He is Our Helper – “He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” Vs. 16
Parakletos: One called alongside to help.
d. He Glorifies Jesus – “He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” John 16:14
e. He Empowers and Convicts – “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin & righteousness & judgment.” John 16:7-8
God the Father is God FOR Us, Jesus is God WITH Us, and the Holy Spirit is God IN us. We can’t afford to ignore or neglect the Holy Spirit!
