“A NEED TO BE REVIVED”
(Ephesians 2:4-5 - NIV)
4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—
it is by grace you have been saved.
The word revival combines two Latin words, “Vivo,” meaning to live, and “re” meaning again. It's a rebirth or a re-awakening. It is an invigorating experience of the Holy Spirit, who moves freely among believers, setting hearts on fire for the Lord.
Paul informed the Ephesians that God, who is rich in mercy, loves us so much that He revived us (“made us alive with Christ”) when we were spiritually dead in our sins. Consequently, we are saved by God’s grace.
Like the Ephesians, we have “A Need To Be Revived.” Our hearts need to be set on fire to propel us to do what God desires before Jesus Christ returns. Having this need, we should plan and prepare to be present at our Church Revival which is Thursday and Friday, October 19-20th at 7:00 p.m. at the South Campus.
We will begin each of the two nights with prayer (7:00-7:30 p.m.), and then we will worship with singing. The Revival will climax with Pastor Marvin Wiley, Rock Of Ages Baptist Church, Maywood, Illinois. Pastor Wiley is a soul-stirring evangelist who preaches all over the United States, and we are so blessed to have him with us another year. Let’s attend and inspire others to attend. (Each of us is asked to give $20.00 to financially support our Revival.)
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
“St. John exists, as A Kingdom Building Church in two communities,
to Evangelize sinners and Equip saints,
who are Edifying and Enjoying one another,
to Exalt the SAVIOR” (Mt. 28:18-20).
80TH CHURCH ANNIVERSARY
God has blessed St. John to worship and serve as a congregation for 80 years, and our theme is as follows: “80 Years Of Praising And Serving A Faithful God” (Ps. 9:1-2). Special Worship Celebrations are scheduled on the 4th Sunday, October 22, 2023, at the North Campus (9:00 a.m.) and the South Campus (11:00 a.m.). Our choir will provide inspirational singing, and two pastors--who are sons of our church--will preach (one at the North Campus and the other at the South Campus). Let’s attend and inspire others to attend. (Each of us is asked to give $80.00 for our Church Anniversary.)
HARVEST FESTIVAL
Join us for a delightful afternoon of fun and festivities (especially tailored for kids) at our 2023 Harvest Festival at the South Campus (parking lots 1 and 2) on Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We foresee this being a day filled with exciting activities that will bring smiles to your children’s faces. We have an array of games, crafts, and interactive entertainment planned to keep the young ones engaged and entertained throughout the event.
MEMORIAL PERIOD
In addition to our current parishioners, St. John is a dynamic congregation because of God foremost and many who have “died in the Lord.” In our 80-year pilgrimage, hundreds are no longer active members because God called them from labor to reward. If God permits, we will acknowledge parishioners who passed in the last year on the 5th Sunday, October 29, 2023, in our 9:00 Worship Celebration at the North Campus and our 11:00 Worship Celebration at the South Campus. Also, our Male Chorus is scheduled to sing at both sites.
INTERCESSORY PRAYER
Intercessory Prayer is when believers pray on behalf of others. James 5:16b says: “Pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” When believers pray for one another, people are blessed. For example, Peter was delivered from prison because the church prayed incessantly to God on his behalf (Acts 12:5-17). Because God answers prayer, please pray daily for others and the following:
St. John Missionary Baptist Church: Ask God to grow our congregation spiritually, numerically, and financially. Also, pray to God regarding our Building Project. Moreover, intercede on behalf of parishioners who are shut in with COVID.
Pastor & Ministers: Kevin B. Hall & Family and Metrice Williams
Deacon: Elwood Jordan
Mothers: Annie Johnson, Geraldine Johnson, Ermestine Martin, Zadie Patterson, Ruth Thomas, Marie Ward, Lillie Wiggins, and Ruth Wilson
Brothers: Anthony Jones and Alvin Parker
Sisters: Drucilla Cooper, Vera Dixon, Nyla Gonzalez, Zodia Jordan, Margaret LeBrane, Deborah McWhorter, Joe Nell Payton, Barbara Ratliff, Dolores Rollins, and Loushica Worley
If you are a sick & shut-in member of St. John who needs special prayer and desires to be added to this list, call (510-233-1779) or email me (pastorhall@sjmbc.org).
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do,
that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it.”
(Jn. 14-13-14)

“THE RIGHT AMOUNT”
Whenever I am involved in a financial transaction, I make sure that I am giving and receiving “The Right Amount.” As believers who are God’s stewards, are we giving the Lord “The Right Amount?” After all, God gives us more than “The Right Amount,” for He blesses us abundantly beyond what we deserve. In return, God requires us to give back to Him 10% of what He blesses us with and freewill offerings.
We are not giving “The Right Amount” if we are giving God anything less than a tenth of our income/increase. A lot of people fail to give “The Right Amount” because they give God what they have after spending their money in other ways.
If we want to be blessed, we need to give God “The Right Amount.” Give to God what’s right rather than what’s left, for giving to God what is left is usually insufficient. God wants our Tithes and Offerings to come from the “first fruits,” so we should put aside and give the first 10% of our income/increase to God. Afterward, we should pay other expenses, invest, and enjoy utilizing the remaining 90%.
Everybody cannot give the same amount in tithes and offerings, but everybody should give based on God’s blessings. Deuteronomy 16:17 says: “Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God which he hath given thee.” God does not require the sum of our tithes and offerings to be the same, but God is delighted with equal sacrifice.
Our giving should reflect our income which is why tithing is ideal. In tithing, as believers, we give a tenth of our income/increase back to God. When we fail to do this, we may experience God’s disfavor. Someone said: “You should give according to your income, lest God makes your income according to your giving.” If what we are giving is less than a tenth of our income/increase, God could lower our income according to our giving. Therefore, let’s be right with God by giving “The Right Amount.”
Believers please God by faithfully and generously giving tithes and offerings to Him. Tithing is giving to God 10% of our gross income/increase (which belongs to God), and the remaining 90% is ours to utilize wisely. Our offerings are what God inspires us to give from the remaining 90% which is in addition to our tithes. Our tithes and offerings should be set aside before paying anything else (first fruits).
At St. John, we give in person during Sunday Morning Worship Celebrations, by mailing or dropping off our tithes and offerings at our Administration Building or South Campus edifice. We also give online through our website (sjmbc.org).
MEMORANDUM
Our Worship Celebrations: We have two in-person Worship Celebrations on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. (the North Campus) and 11:00 a.m. (the South Campus). Also, our virtual audience is proliferating. Let’s continue to share with others how they can view our Worship Celebrations via live streaming (YouTube) or hear them via podcasts. For more information, you may visit our website at sjmbc.org.
Our Family Life Center: Please pray daily asking God to direct us regarding our Family Life Center. We have submitted a revised draft of our architectural design which hopefully will reduce the construction cost. Our Family Life Center will be adjacent to our current sanctuary at the North Campus, consisting of a gymnasium, game room (for the youth), and weight room. Also, a parking lot will be across the street from this edifice.
Many of us made a pledge that we fulfilled, but some have not. May God bless each of us who have already fulfilled our pledge and others who have made “Building Fund” contributions. I encourage everyone (if you have not already done so) to :
